CHANGE PROCESSES, ACTION
Continuing this morning lecture of October the 19th.
This is the afternoon of October the 19th. | He could be a good businessman if a fellow only knew what a business-man was. |
Now, we've - we're working with a process which is in essence Change Processing. Let me give you another definition of this processing. This is an objective process - an objective process, not a subjective process - and it is the first of a series of processes that involve action. | It's very easy for somebody to come around and tell you bluntly, "Well, you're not a good manager." |
If you will see now that Six Steps to Better Beingness run with action is not Six Steps to Better Beingness run with no motion, you will understand the difference between what you're doing and the results you're getting and what went before. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to indoctrinate a public such as the public of America into an action process. Another thing, to release material which has the word action tabbed onto it immediately confuses it with at least a half a thousand schools. People immediately know that they know all about this because it has something to do with action; like psychodrama, which means that the insane person wants to go insane so you let him go insane. You let him claw the walls, and they claw the walls. And they want to claw walls and eat bedspreads so you make them eat bedspreads. Only you all of a sudden start running "What is the significance of what you are doing?" on them. You'll have them go around being Papa and being Mama and so forth. | And what's a good manager? Well, a good manager would be the one who had a successful business, by our present definition, and that would be about all the definition there was to it: He has a successful business. |
By the way, any insane person will be very, very happy to play this game with you. They will play it for hours. They will play it for days. I've never seen the like of their avidity for playing the game of being something. "You want me to be a dog? All right, I'll be a dog. Woof woof" And boy, the most savage dog barks you ever heard in your life. Real dog right there - pam. They'll roll around on the floor and roll under the sofa and eat a bone. They'll do anything you want. But you can just keep them acting - as long as they're producing an effect on you, why, they're in beautiful shape. So psychodrama is not too good for their health and sanity, but it's awfully amusing. | But do you know that it isn't necessarily true that a successful business is desirable? You get how adrift... This society says it's desirable. But look what a successful business does to a person in terms of this universe. Boy, it just hangs him around and garlands him with MEST until he can't bail himself out in any direction. He keeps acquiring this and acquiring that and getting his communications set up this way and that way and the harder he works at it, the more pinned he is, until he's no place else but a desk and so forth. |
So that - you can get - this is razzle-dazzle, most of this talk I'm giving you here, but let me tell you that it's nothing compared to the amount of razzle-dazzle that's gone on in the community in action and psychotherapy. Don't for a moment suppose anybody knows how to do this. In the first place, you have to know the whole bulk and body of Scientology in order to produce these effects. | Well, is it desirable? This guy all of a sudden can't understand what's happening to him, because being pinned to the desk he's lost the affection of his family because he never can go anyplace. They forget who's providing the daily bread and he says that's important. And the next thing you know, his family busts up or something of the sort or he's getting old and decrepit and worrying himself stiff or the wife takes to gambling or drinking. This thing called a "successful business" does not wind up in the right bin; it just doesn't do it. |
It's easy to forget how much you know and just go on knowing it, you know, and performing with it. But if you didn't know about the thetan, and you didn't know about possible electronics, and you didn't know about possible whole track action, the action of space, if you didn't know what space was, have some idea of what time was, know what facsimiles were and what engrams were, you would simply play hell getting any results with the techniques which you're doing right this minute. | But he says, "Look, I'm helping people. I'm doing this and that. I'm getting forward things and so forth, and then they do all these terrible things to me." |
You would go just so far into the case and then you'd get scared. Or you would say, "Well, let's do something else more interesting." You wouldn't recognize it for what it was. That's a fact; for the good reason that you're now coasting and had begun to coast with objective processing on a tremendous bank full of very interesting experience. You know your own experience and you're willing to use it. | Well, he's on the hidden standard. The obvious standard is that if one tends to his job and does his knitting and so forth, he will come out correct in the long run. He will be all right. Oh, yeah? What's "all right"? Does that mean without pain and without randomity? See, that's just about as desirable as the little girl in the plastic polka-dot dress that is a little statue in the middle of the living room. That's not a desirable thing; and yet a completely successful business is complete automaticity. |
There isn't any reason under the sun why you can't get technique - results with these techniques on a purely rote basis. We take some fellow by the name of Joe Burkowitz and put him in a turban, and we could tell him, “All right, now" - tell somebody to be back of his head and back him into the Empire State Building and use the Empire State Building for a body and something or another. And he would do this just about so long. It wouldn't be making sense to him - up to the moment when he himself would key in about what you really did with somebody when you told him to get out of a body. And then they'd suddenly - he'd suddenly say to himself, "Gee, it's a wonderful idea. I've been having trouble with my wife, Mimi, and well, why don't I just send this preclear down to my wife and get her loused up, or something. That's the thing to do." And then all of a sudden the preclear blows a ridge, goes into apathy. He doesn't know what's happened. See, his imagination would cease at that moment. He'd get any kind of a deviant idea. | Well, what's this - you know, the guy says, "Well then, if I hell around and date all the secretaries and blow all my dough and obtain my advantages over my competitors by false pretenses and if I'm just a perfect rotter to everybody in the community and so forth, why, naturally everybody would hate me and I would not be a successful businessman." |
And by the way, a few billion to the billionth power deviant ideas can come from just this thing which you're doing because you're sitting right there toward the top, not at the top, but toward the top of all there is to motion and action. So fellows start to run this and then they'll start to develop and evolve ways and means to use it. But whereas this might make a wonderfully random pattern, it is not necessarily psychotherapy. | Well what do you know. A survey of business demonstrates that the latter character wins. That's a hell of a note, come to think about it. |
So don't think that when we ran all these subjective techniques we were wasting time. I've been trying to give you some sort of solid reality on what a subjective technique was and what the mind was trying to respond to and trying not to respond to. I hope you have some of that reality today. Because the chances of your seeing it again, as such, are faint unless you want to start fooling around with a preclear. | It's higher Tone Scale than what is being considered a successful business in this community, but it's still awful low Tone Scale. It has just moved up into the level of cruelty and action. The guy has more motion. |
Yet the techniques you've been handling in the last two weeks are superior to any psychotherapy anybody ever had. But get the validity of this. That's no pat on the back from me or anybody else. It just happens to be at the level of truth. | So, when we come down to an analysis of the thing, the only unethical thing a person can do is to deny himself because that leads to no responsibility. He says, "I can't do that." One day to produce some randomity he says, "I'm unable to do this." After that he's done; he's denied himself. That's no responsibility, then no force, and he's on his way down. |
Get this: Your operation with this Change Process - motion processing of the character you've been doing - used with gradient scales will crack to pieces cases which have been tremendously resistant. And if you're smart enough, if you're clever enough and know which inverted dynamic to enter a case on, you can bust psychos this way. You can bust them quick. You can take apathy cases, you can break them loose. You can remedy any kind of a situation you ever heard of. | He also, in the course of going down, becomes an increasingly destructive, aberrated person; winds up at last without anything. So does your successful businessman who is conducting a successful, routine, highly automatic sort of a business. That fellow winds up at the bottom of the slot too, because it's motion. |
All right. You just take - just take this Formula H. You know, Formula H. Just because you know Formula H is no reason you should use it. That's what theta is trying to do. It's trying to reach and withdraw. You can make somebody reach and withdraw for present time. You can do all sorts of interesting things with it and you can produce more effect than you produced with a lot of other things. | What, then, is your gradient scale all the way down the line? It's motion, isn't it? So the less motion a person has, the less life he has in him, right? - in this universe. And yet theta itself at optimum contains no motion. So we have the MEST universe introducing a factor that the thetan doesn't require and yet the thetan is as able as he can use this factor called motion in this universe. And if he has a high-motion tolerance, he will be able to carry on for a long time on his self-determinism. If he has a low-motion tolerance, he doesn't carry on his self-determinism worth a nickel. What's the end-all of ethics? This is for the standpoint of you as an auditor processing somebody. What's the end-all of it? It's just motion; it's being able to maintain motion. |
But remember that the formula, reach and withdraw, is only a small section of Change Processing. It's just phenomena which happens to show up in Change Processing. You'd better know what the phenomena is. | Now, this happens to work out beautifully because we've got a maintained motion level. When a fellow has a high-maintained motion level, high enough, everything around him will survive. But when he starts to drop it off things around him, one by one, start to fall away and die. And this is the increasing individuation. People become more and more separate from each other, they become less and less cooperative in what they're doing and they finally become the "only one" and out through the bottom of the spout. All right. |
Now, you start running reach and withdraw on this basis: Get the fact that you must reach but can't reach or must withdraw-can't withdraw. The second you run one or the other of those things, you turn on an emotion very often in a case and that emotion is called insanity. Insanity is not a condition of mind, it is a condition of motion. It's an inhibited compulsion. It's "can't go no place but got to," "can't get away from there but have to." That's insanity. And it produces a sort of an overlapping wave action. It's very silly, but it's produced not by the thought - it's an energy sensation. And this "Neoww, my God, I'm going crazy," is that sensation. That is the sensation which is produced. | You'll get some astonishing things in the processes we're going to run. But I'm giving you this to somewhat inhibit your looking for the reason - because there isn't any reason - or to - and to realize that your preclear - what he's doing. He's going through a haystack looking for the hidden standard. And it's scarcer than any needle in any haystack, because you could use a magnet to find that. |
Now, do you think for a moment you're not going to run into this sensation the second you run into Change Processing? You get a guy flipping from one thing to another thing to back to back to back to back and forth. Boy, you sure will. All of a sudden this fellow is liable to turn on this terrific emotion. He's going crazy. He knows it. | Male voice: There are two more points on this hidden standard deal. |
You have to be able to realize that you're asking him to reach and withdraw from that subject or class of subjects on which he has this compulsion-inhibition, see? And you've asked him right there on the button. You started him in. You got him on an inverted dynamic and maybe you misestimated it a slight bit because he shouldn't get a tremendous bad reaction from this, and off he goes. Away he goes. | Male voice: One of them is that there are different hidden standards for different areas. For example, being a good businessman, being a good family man, it may not necessarily be mutually compatible. That gets the guy into trouble trying to find both of them at the same time when you can't find both of them. at the same time. |
You have to know it for what it is. | Male voice: The other one is that this hidden standard changes in different situations even for one particular hidden standard. |
What is it? Reach and withdraw. It's just reach and withdraw. He's run into Formula H, that's all. That's all there is to it. | You're missing me, Burke. The hidden standard never exists. |
All of a sudden he's completely stuck. He's stuck up against his face and the most horrible feeling of frozen horror comes over him. Well, if you weren't well trained, you'd all of a sudden think to yourself "Well, he's discovered a facsimile which is horrible." No he hasn't. He's run into the null point of "can't reach-can't withdraw, can't grasp and can't let go." And all of that in a bundle accumulates and means one thing, and that's horror. Is he afraid of anything? No sir. You've just run into a condition of motion. | Male voice: Yeah, I know, but the thing... |
Now, if you remember the old lectures where we described these various cycles of motion. We said apathy. All right, you could tell whether or not a preclear is in apathy. You remember any demonstrations I've ever given in lectures that had to do with chairs or with my hand, where I show, all right, apathy - the guy - we put his hand down, you know, and his hand is down. Now, we're going to find out what kind of a case we've got. All right. We take his hand and we move it. And it simply goes over and stays where we move it to. That guy's an apathy case. | It might change as why it didn't exist but your successful family man, your successful businessman would only be separate individuals very, very low on the Tone Scale. |
His hand is there. We try to pick it up and it's real heavy. But we can drag it over to the place. He's in grief. | Actually, the people who would back off from a person who make and maintain a high creative level of motion are very few. And they only back off from him when his creative motions - drifts down a little bit and then everything starts going to pieces, because that's individuation - everything starts falling apart into units - the business starts falling apart into units and so on. Do you see that? |
Now, his hand is there. We pick up his hand and we put it over here and after a moment he puts his hand back. What's he in? He's in covert hostility. | This is a little hard to see at this level in this society, because if we were to take this society as an example - a uniform example of what was optimum - we would find ourselves in a terrible situation, because it is nowhere optimum, because it is tremendously individuated. It is full of reasons in all directions; therefore, there appears to be - appears to be far too much randomity for anybody to tolerate. |
We start to move his hand. His hand is sitting there and we start to move his hand and we - happily we're going to pick his hand up, see, neowww, goes right back into position again. You don't pick his hand up, you've got instantaneous resentment. He is in anger, which is 1.5. | There was far too much randomity for the field of psychology ever to make any forward progress. They'd look at every person and find out that every person had a different quirk than every other person and they didn't have a common denominator for all people. Therefore, the problem was unsolvable as long as you tried to solve it in its own strata. |
Now we start to pick up his hand and we put our hand over toward his to pick it up and he comes to meet our hand and he goes slap. We don't want - he doesn't want that hand near him, see? That's antagonism. And when he comes over - you could come over to pick up his hand and you start moving his hand a little bit, so on, "Sure," he'll say. "Why - why not. You want to move my hand someplace? Well go ahead and move it someplace." He'll take it over and move it, sort of a "the hell with you," bored with the whole thing, you see. | Well, that's what I'm asking you not to do, is to try to solve - don't try to solve your preclear as an individual case. (Now that's a hell of a note, isn't it.) In Dianetics, yes, solve your preclear as an individual case; Scientology, no. That's your main - probably your main trouble. |
All right. Now, you're going to move his hand someplace. You're going to move his hand over to the left and you reach for his hand and he's - looks before he puts his hand down. But he moves his hand, you don't. You just indicate you want it over there on the left and he's cooperating. But he looks to see where he puts - before he puts it down. That's conservatism. | Now, I'll give you the end-all of this in Acceptance Level Processing. What is the acceptance level of a person? Well, you'd find out that which had kicked in his force screens he now desired. Only the society tells him he can't desire that anymore. So you just have to find out what it is. |
And right above that level, if you reach over for his hand and you say - he'll notice that you're going to put his hand over on the tea table or something, he's going to cooperate. "Well, oh boy, sure. Let's get this demonstration on," and he'll put his hand over there. And he'll put it over there very rapidly. Probably more rapid than you could've put his hand over there. He's in enthusiasm. | Well, you take the Expanded GITA list and in brackets, you just have him start tossing these things up. Well, you'll find out that most of the things he tosses up, nothing happens to them. You have him toss up women and he puts up women that are dressed, in good health, good condition and so forth; he just mocks up a woman, see? The mock-up just stays there. Perfectly all right; there's no real charge on women if he gets the mock-up up. Till we start to take their clothes off in the mock-up and all of a sudden every naked woman he puts up there might flop back in - right straight against the screens! You know - slurp-slurp-slurp! That's because women are dressed all the time and there's become a scarcity of women who have no clothes on. All right. |
What are these hand signals? You see what they all are? They just have to do with motion and nothing but motion. | This would be a real healthy guy; this would be up there on a motion range of top jet-pilot rating. That's about the way that would behave. You won't find preclears lower down behaving that way, but very often the conservatism in a person will permit him - that is his ability to tolerate this cultural level - will permit him to put up this kind of a thing. And nothing happens till you take her clothes off and still nothing happens. And then you take her clothes off and give her a different social standing - give her no social standing, make her into a prostitute - the mock-up. Well, if at - if at this moment you were to get a collapse of that mock-up into the fellow's bank - pang! why, you'd have a pretty healthy American male. |
And so it is that every emotion comes in and ties in with motion itself and ties in with nothing else but motion. There are your emotions. Now, there are these things on various levels, so that there's a low-level span and a high-level span and a much higher-level span and a much lower-level span - each one. | All right. Now we say that we did all these things and nothing happened to the mock-up particularly. There was no action or activity on the part of the mock-up until we started to add blemishes, disease and then terrible intentions toward him. Blemishes, disease, no beauty, horribleness, you see, and bad intentions toward him and all of a sudden every mock-up he puts up like that goes into the bank - just slurp-slurp-slurp! Boy, is he hungry for this mock-up. And you start - just start feeding them in quantity. That is to say, he mocks them up in quantity. He can't even control this mock-up. This mock-up is just into the bank - flash! And you have to feed him this character for a half an hour or so forth, until all of a sudden he changes his attitude toward women in general. And what do you know, he will - he'll change his attitude toward women in general. This is the fastest way I know of to change people's attitudes. |
What's apathy? You can move his hand around at will. | You'll find a lot of cases in Expanded GITA where just really nothing much happens as you try to handle women, but they won't move either. He can't move them out or move them in. Well, you just lower them to the level of automatic move out or move in. What is he really revulsing against? Well, he has to waste that before he can have it. |
What's grief? There's a slight resistance to the hand being moved, but merely because it's heavy, not because it has any determinism. It's a hold, grief is. | These fellows really start on down the line. You have to find out at what level. You just take the standard commodities with which existence is made. |
What's fear? Fear is "do it quick and then get it back again. Let's not even show them we're afraid." So his hand moves over and flips back, rather covertly. When you're not looking again, he'll put his hand back in the same place. He'll probably have some reason why he does it and he'll do it rather obviously so as not to hurt your feelings. All kinds of things. | Just take a weapon. What's his acceptance levels on weapons? All right, we mock - have him mock up a pistol. Nah! We mock up a pistol with a silencer. It's getting more covert, you see. It twitches toward him slightly. And as we go on down the line we finally find that his acceptance level of a pistol is something that would shoot a jet of venom, would make absolutely no noise, that was invisible and which wasn't really against the law if it were found. You get that level of covertness as you go down the line. That's his level of acceptance. |
And when you try to move his hand and he's in anger, you're just not going to move his hand. | All right. We take and find the fellow's level of acceptance of ground. We get a clean sidewalk; nothing happens. We get a sidewalk that's got mud on it; no, it's still stable. We get a sidewalk that has mud and excreta all over it, all of a sudden-slurp! Then if you ask him, a very funny thing must be happening. The sidewalk stayed there. It wasn't collapsing on the bank at all. It was only the excreta which collapsed in on the bank. This becomes scarcity, you see, of excreta. We really had to mess that sidewalk up and - we finally find out by messing up the sidewalk, by making the sidewalk completely no traction so that you would fall down anytime you hit it, and that if you fell down you would go through and wind up in a sewer - we'll find out that sidewalk will collapse into the bank. You get the levels? |
And he's in antagonism, you try to move his hand, he'll push your hand away. | What the devil does this have to do with behavior? What does it have to do with nervous tension, strain? What's it have to do with motion? It has a lot to do with it. |
And boredom: Sure, you can move his hand. Sure, he's bored about it. To hell with it. Boredom is a kind of a high-level apathy, you see? | People walking down here on the street are under a terrific tension of trying to keep on accepting at the society's acceptance level, which is not their acceptance level at all. And they're trying madly to keep up this tension of being careful to accept and careful to reject just as they were taught and so on. And they're under this terrific tension because the stuff they're accepting isn't acceptable to them, so that it's all under duress. They're under continual duress and they have an idea they're putting other people under continual duress; but they think - they think that everything they do practically is an overt act. |
And conservatism: He'll have to inspect the place before he lets his hand be put down, but he will put his hand down. | For instance, their acceptance level is not a clean, white sheet of paper; and yet they sit in an office and shuffle clean white sheets of paper. Every once in a while it gets too much for them and they spill a bottle of ink. Every once in a while they have to clean up their typewriter - the typewriter gets real dirty somehow or another, so they get their hands all over with ribbon and grease and everything else and then they handle two or three business letters with that. That's a little bit better. And you'd think they would feel real embarrassed by some accident or other. No, they don't; they just act embarrassed. Their acceptance level is way under what they're instructed to have. And as a person's acceptance level sinks and as the society acceptance level remains the same, he's under more and more duress. The society is putting him under continual duress. Why not? Why? He's got to pretend all the time that he can't have what he's got to have. |
And enthusiasm: He'll find out what you're doing, he'll cooperate so damn fast you'll wish to Christ you never started it sometimes. | You take the extreme case of this, is the second dynamic - the homo. He's in terrible condition all the time. He can't have what he's supposed to have, according to him; because he wouldn't let himself have it, because something or other. He just gets all balled up all the time. Actually, a homo is nothing very curious. Any thetan who has a man's body is obtaining his sexual sensation as a thetan from a man's body. That's all there is to it. The man - the GE, of course, is instructed to obtain his sensation from a woman's body. But a fellow starts in on the level of sexual sensation and he will back out toward the realization the scarcest thing there is, is sensation from men. And if he has this terrific scarcity of sensation from men, after a while men will sort of cease to exist and his own body will start to cease to exist, and there you get all the troubles with the endocrine system. His own body, sexually, has ceased to exist merely because he can't have anything to do sexually with men. |
All right. Now, those are the levels of motion. Now, it's strange to find a thing called pain at 1.8 on the Tone Scale. Right there, pang, right on the button. Fascinating; it's just above hold. Below that they get an anesthesia. The guy's got to be able to push out a little bit more then he pulls in, in order for something to hurt. The end of a cycle is anesthesia. And although the pain may knock him flat, at the first moment that it starts to hurt, he's pushing against it harder than it's pushing against him. In other words, it isn't an interlock. | Nobody's advocating here that one should suddenly rearrange all the (quote) moral values (unquote) of this society in order to straighten out people's sanity. But this homo comes in and he's trembling like mad. He's trying desperately to hide the fact that he's in real trouble according to himself The society is about to come down on him like a pack of wolves. He doesn't quite know what's happening. What do you do? |
All right, then, horror is a harmonic of anger itself And horror is a little delicate harmonic which is down there below anger. But grief and apathy are results of people who have already been in horror. So there's another position right in there. | Well, supposing it was a girl - lesbian. What would you do? You wouldn't have to treat the individual case. You'd just start on - if you want to do something to patch this up quickly and so on - one of the fastest ways to do it would be find out what the acceptance level of girls is for her. And just feed that. Have her mock up these girls of this type and you'll find after a while that these mock-ups don't collapse. This is the mystery of the disappearing mock-up. |
Now, what's insanity? Insanity could be anyplace up and down that level, according to my present scan of it. I haven't figured out exactly where it goes. But boy, it's nothing more nor less than a wavelength. | Well now, this person's whole activity and entire motivation is operating from an arbitrary hidden standard which actually is a real hidden standard. It's a real standard but it's hidden. See, it started out with a pretended standard, but after it gets down this - to this seamy level of life, it's actual but it's very hidden. |
Now, a wavelength would be something different than a harmonic. It would be a characteristic or something of the sort. Every harmonic level has it's own wavelength. You could have all the wavelengths at 1.5. You see, it would be what the wave is doing rather than what the wave is expressing. | What is the hidden standard of any human being toward which he's trying to argue other human beings? It's a very simple problem. The hidden standard is the acceptance level of the being. And Mama, when she's standing there saying, "I want you to be a good little girl," means exactly this: "I want you to be my acceptance level of little girls." |
Okay. So you could look for any of these things to show up. What do you do about them? You do more of the same thing. Well, does this require better or worse handling of a pc? It requires better handling of a pc. It requires a very professional manner on your part. | Now, you can shudder over this one if you'd like, because the better the little girl got - the nicer she got according to her storybooks, as a "good little girl," the more hated she would become by Mama, because she is under duress, continual - Mama's under duress continually. Mama's acceptance level of a little girl might very well be a lascivious, wicked, foul-mouthed, filthy, evil little brat that was homely as hell. And Mama's unexplained motives and so forth start to reveal themselves with Acceptance Level Processing. |
What should you know, what little facts should you know, to handle a pc well and keep from getting in trouble? What little things should you know? That your pc is trying to do what you want him to do. He's trying to do that. Therefore you must start in on a gradient that he can do. He can obey you. If you fix it so he can't obey you, he's going to spring about. Now, you give him some heavy process and he goes on, but it's too heavy for him - it's too heavy for him - he's trying to do. And the conflict is between you and the pc, not you - not the pc and the technique because you're asking him to do this and it's too heavy for him. And so he's going to try and now he'll be able to do the most fantastic things that he'd never be able to do by himself simply because you're an auditor. And yet at a certain moment along the line he is going to get into this kind of a condition: it's too much for him; he thinks he needs some encouragement, some help, something of the sort; he'll ask for it. He'll ask for a slightly lighter dose, something. Well, don't - don't ignore it. If you keep on insisting that he take the same dose, he will flip back against you and become disobedient as far as a pc is concerned and he will begin to believe that he can't do what you ask him to do. | What kind of a person would your parents accept? Everybody's taught that one's acceptance level - acceptance level of the parents, the hidden standard of the parents - was far superior in terms of cleanliness, motion and performance. And it shows up directly on this processing because there's a vacuum in the preclear's bank for what the parents desired. |
The first thing of which you must convince a pc is that he can do what you ask him to do. Therefore it's much better to start in with a pc with a very, very light technique that he can do. As a matter of fact, the lightest technique which I use on a pc I think I'm going to have any trouble with is make him sit in all the chairs in the room. Make him move around the room. Why - why does this suddenly make him a better pc? Ha-ha! You've moved him all around the room, therefore you can evaluate for him. Same reason a drill sergeant drills men in close-order drill: they're more obedient. | There's a vacuum there and it'll operate mechanistically this way: You can actually have the preclear start mocking up all the things which he was when he was a little boy and find out who accepted them. How does he know who accepted them? Mechanically. He mocks up a sick little boy and he mocks up a sick little boy and he mocks up a sick little boy and a sick little boy and a sick little boy and a sick little boy. And he keeps doing this and he's got a lot of them, and all of a sudden - slurp! Something out in front of him somewhere in this occlusion or into the darkness or some person on a - on a wide-open case, just right into the plain daylight, this thing disappears. Well, it disappears and disappears and disappears and disappears and disappears and all of a sudden, there stands Mama. |
Now, our goal is not obedience on the part of the pc because we're about to apply techniques which knock obedience flat. But we'd better establish it before we start sailing into this case. Just a little bit. You can even establish it with a little chatter. You could just make him agree with you two or three times, that's all. If you start it the other way to, where he's doing all the flowing, however, toward you, and then you think you're going to audit him, you're crazy. You shut off that flow and get it turned around the other way because the sooner you do, the better off you're going to be. | You never explain it to him what's going on; you just tell him to start. What kind of a little boy was he? Well, he's - "I was sick a lot of the time." Mock up a sick little boy. You say, "Who wanted a sick little boy in your family?" And he may titter a little bit and say, "My Aunt Cusie," or something like that. But don't pay any attention to that, just have him mock up a sick little boy, sick little boy, sick little boy, sick little boy - slurp - Mama. "Why, goddamn her! She used to try to make me sick all the time!" Now, it's always revealed to him, see? This is what he couldn't admit to himself. |
Now, supposing your pc all of a sudden, in the middle of the session, starts to hit one of these reach and withdraw things and just feels like he's just going nuts - he's just going to fly apart. And you've already demonstrated to him that you don't have good control over him. Oh boy, he's really scared and that whole emotion will magnify a thousand times over and it will practically master him. | And you will find uniformly in your preclear that his main quarrel and problem with this existence is trying to be acceptable and particularly trying to be acceptable to his parents. And if he's trying to be acceptable to his parents, he is taking the storybook value of what acceptable children are, not what is acceptable as a child. |
But if you've already demonstrated that you have good control of him, you haven't got a thing to worry with. You just say, "Well, do it a couple of more times." You just give him a couple of more. And although he can't possibly do it, because you have him in your control, he'll do it. And all of a sudden he'll be out of the woods. | Furthermore, as a young thetan trying to get someplace in the world, he's actually, too much, at that age - he's too good at that age for anything around him. And yet everything around him seems to infer that he is too bad, merely because they don't accept him. And he has this as the topsy-turvy computation on his case. |
The handling of the person has a keynote. That is to say, you let him do what he's trying to do a little bit better. Now, if a pc has your permission to go batty for a moment - you know, he's at - he's at a terrific moment of strain. If he has your permission to be at a terrific moment of strain, you would think offhand that this would kind of louse him up if you said, "Well, go ahead." But it won't. The pc jumps out of a chair and starts to crawl the walls, you just make sure that he crawls all the walls. Not kind of meanlike, so forth, but as though you just had that in mind all the time and as though that was what was supposed to happen at that moment of the case. He practically scares you out of your wits. He flies a foot out of the chair and damn near busts the wall in half with his fist or some sort of thing, you say, "Well, all right now. Now turn your weight around and slam it against the other wall, and get some equalization there." And you'll be utterly amazed, he will do just that and you've got him right back in control again immediately; just helping him to do what he has to do, because you've suddenly taken control of that thing which threw him against the wall. You haven't selected it out for randomity. You're not continuing to fight it, you've all of a sudden taken control of it. | He thinks that good things are acceptable things. That's not true. Bad things, very often, are more acceptable than good things. |
Something, whatever it was, some thought, some strain, some impulse, suddenly shows up and slams him against the wall so you just take advantage of it. You own it now. And it goes into apathy - pam - right now, and the pc sits right down back in the chair and starts the processing again. | So, we'll find his basic problem is his acceptability to his parents. He's never been able to understand why his parents didn't accept him. You'll find most of these - most people have this computation. Why didn't they completely accept him? Why not? Now, why was he sick? And why was this and why was that? And he can ask why for a long time. |
Somebody decides they're going to go nuts and you say, "Well," instead of saying "Who - who decided they were nuts; who - who went crazy in your family?" instead of going into any research action like this, you give them some kind of a drill that actually includes in it some sort of action. The guy starts to go into an agitated motion. Well, for heaven's sakes, give him an agitated motion which can then be brought into a coordinated motion. How do you tame a river? Do you tame a river by putting out your two little lily-white hands into a cup and moving it into a new channel? No, you don't. You build a dam and then you channel the river in and you channel all of it in. So you'd have to start building the dam, however, with one stone. And if you're going to put insanity under control, you build it with one stone. That's a gradient scale. And then you put two stones in there. And if you have to wind up by having to put ten billion stones in there, you'll still have trained the river into a new path and made it run true and straight. But you're not going to suddenly do it by jumping into the middle of the stream and just saying, "River, go the opposite direction." It won't do it. | Well, you just run this process on him. You mock him up as a little boy and all of a sudden, he's - actually these mock-ups will start to fly into the distance. And as they fly into the distance Mama will get fat. Mama really wanted a sick little boy; Mama really wanted a bad little boy. It was "What did Mama accept?" - whatever Mama was pretending she accepted. What she actually accepted actually shows up in the mock-ups, at once, because the communication lines have scarcities on them, and the evaluation is totally a problem of what has been scarce. It isn't a problem of bad or good; it's only a problem of what has been scarce. |
Same way with insanity. It's a tremendous overpowering impulse on the part of the individual. The individual thinks that he can't possibly control this and finally bursts asunder; he's lost all possible method of handling himself or anybody else around him - he's gone, he thinks, see? And you notice that his method of insanity is to shriek. Well, you know that he's not supposed to shriek. The office building in which you're situated is strictly "no shriek." Well, it would be an excellent idea if you were to give him a couple of shrieks. Just that. Instead of saying, "No shriek," tell him to take a long breath before the next shriek. | So, you can solve the preclear's present time life with Acceptance Level Processing simply by mocking up all the various things he was and who - what was acceptable to him in terms of parents. And, well, good parents and nice parents, and all of a sudden you'll get some parent that just beat him all the time. And that was acceptable. And a little thin page begins to show up out of his own psyche is that pain is desirable - pain can be desirable. |
It's too obvious if you simply say, "Oh, cry again," or "Scream again." He thinks you're mocking him. You say, well, something devious. You have to be right on the ball; use your imagination. Say, "Well, now, before the next one, take a long breath and oxygenate your body, hold your head up, scream." He will. You've asserted the control of his head rather than the control of his scream. On the third scream you'll have control of the scream, too. | His mama and papa were as nice as could be, as mild as rainwater. They provided no security as far as he was concerned at all, because they weren't tough enough. You know, he saw society pushing them around and shoving them around and able to do anything with them. No security. They were never tough with him; they were just always good to him. And he saw in this, as a little child, dangerousness. He saw that he was - he was not protected in that family. Everything was entirely too mild. |
That is the way the MEST universe operates. It takes over a little bit and then it takes over a little bit more and takes over a little bit more. And once in a while it has to withdraw and attack all over again. If some pc gets so fouled up that you possibly couldn't bail him out in a million years, why, you tell him that you're going to lay all this aside for three days and he's to come back at the end of that time. You tell him with a very controlled, matter-of-fact tone of voice about the whole thing, as though this was routine, regular: "Cases such as yours usually settle down in about three days, and I think yours will be settled down in about three days and we will have gotten over the first part of the little trial you have to bear." He's in horrible shape. He's coming down with pneumonia or something of the sort and you can't get him into communication enough to do a thing about it. | And you'll actually find this turning up. You'll find a child with perfectly wonderful parents - according to the society's definition where "wonderful people" are those people who are in apathy - you'll find that this child was terrorized in his early life by nightmares and everything else. He knew his parents couldn't protect him and so he couldn't accept his parents. |
The moment when you think you should wash your hands of the whole thing, just withdraw for another attack. You'll think it over for three days and your own nerves will be a lot better and three days later the guy will come back again, and he'll say, "Well, all right, now, let's go over that again," so forth. Well, he's made up his mind that you're cool enough and matter-of-fact enough in order to handle his case. | He wouldn't have cared if Papa was nine feet tall and has hair all over if Papa was a nice Joe. This follows through on an - on a - I mean, as far as the environment was concerned - if the environment respected Papa, why, the kid felt real secure. |
You say, "I very often do this to a person so he can get in better control of his body." Anything you want to tell him. But the whole thing of it is, is do more of it. Make it more so. And if that doesn't work then draw back for a completely new attack. Either right in the session itself or days later. | You'll find this on ships. You'll very often find a sweetness-and-light skipper. And oh, he'll just be babying the crew along and tying up everybody's big toe and everybody's stumbles and so forth, has no sadistic attitude toward anything. He's never mean, he's never tough. People come up to mast; he never passes sentence on them. He never thinks up anything vicious. He smiles every morning. He - you'd say, "Gee, this is an ideal captain." The hell it is, the ship's a shambles. |
Now, you can draw back in an attack. He goes just so far and he's just getting loopier and loopier and loopier, and you say, well, we can't process on here for hours and hours and hours. Your mistake would be to go on and process for hours. What do you do? Just withdraw the whole attack. | And you go aboard some other ship and this guy's just meaner than a gut-shot bear. Sailor's chipping a little bit of rust. The captain walks by in the passageway. The sailor didn't knock off- a little flake of rust falls on the captain's sleeve or something like that. He'll find within a half an hour adequate reason to retain this boy aboard ship for ten days. No shore liberty. He'll find all sorts of odds and ends. He'll go around looking for trouble. |
I've even gone to the point of telling a preclear when he was writhing on the floor, and so forth, to "mock up a case. Now, you got that?" The guy can hardly get your communication at all. "Now stand up and walk over to the window. Open the window and throw it out." He does this. It's distracting. He is now not rolling around on the floor. Now you say, "Now let's sit down. Okay." Now a brand-new technique, see, "Remember something real. Mock up your schoolteacher." Anything. Completely off balance. And although he'll try to scream, scream, scream the way he was, or writhe, writhe, writhe, he'll make a bit of an effort because you're telling him to - to scream, scream, scream. | Why, you'd say he's completely unreliable; he favors several fellows in the crew; he hands out all kinds of passes where he shouldn't hand them out; and he makes ratings where he shouldn't make them, and holy Christ, this fellow is terrible. This is just a terrible captain indeed, and you'll find the men happy, content, cheerful and so on. The skipper's tough, that's all. |
Now, the only way you can break rapport with the pc is to impose a control on him which is antipathetic to his survival according to him. And you really have to be real tough. How an auditor managed to break rapport with a case, I don't know, because I handle cases with baseball gloves. I don't handle cases easily, I handle them real hard, real tough. | I know one of the toughest deck officers - toughest first lieutenant I ever ran into - you would've thought was the meanest one you ever heard of - he - that he'd be completely unsuccessful with his men because he was sadistic. You're taught by the movies that this is not acceptable, you see? So we're going on a fictional standard all the time which doesn't compare to reality. |
One fellow told me over and over again that he just could not stand the feeling or the thought of a hand around his throat. This was what he was really worried about, so forth. So I told him to put his own hand around his throat. I just gave him some present time processing. "Put your own hand on your throat. Now take it away. Now put your own hand on your throat again. Take it away. Now put your own hand on your throat again. All right. Now take it away. Now put your other hand on your throat. Now take it away. Now ..." | I knew this fellow; he was working and one of the - then the guy who had the next division, the officer who had the next division was a nice guy who helped his sailors get their ratings, who helped them study, who taught them, who didn't permit any victimizing to go on in his division and so forth, but he was very nice and kind and polite and mild and so forth. And his division was a shambles. It was ruined! Everybody walked all over him. They gave him so on and so on. As a matter of fact, they hated him. |
He said, "You know, that's a funny thing. My hands are all tingly." | He never went to the captain to protest against indignities or injustices or anything else. He never stood up for his own division. He was just nice to everybody, including his superiors. |
"Well, put it on your throat. Take it away again," and so forth. | This guy who had the other division used to go in occasionally and he just could be heard half the length of the ship tearing up the executive officer about what was going on with his division. He was fighting topside and bottomside too. It wasn't just force all by itself these men were afraid of. What they felt was that there was some justice going on. There was no real reason behind it; they just were secure, that's all. They felt if one of them was suddenly given a bad - I mean, a general court martial for nothing, that at least their lieutenant would've gone up there on the bridge and just torn the god damn bridge up. They would have fully expected him to come back and blacken the eye and broken the nose of the guy that had caused him this much trouble. They felt secure with such a man. |
And he said, "Well, this is silly. It isn't doing me any good. I'm just getting more and more hectic." | Well, this all goes down to the level of motion. What's motion tolerance? Here we've got acceptance level. What's a person's acceptance level of motion? That's the most important acceptance level there is. How much motion could your parents tolerate in you? Whatever way you'd tackle the problem, it all winds up in this same one. |
And I said, "Well, probably take somebody else's hand," and grabbed him by the back of the neck and choked him. Took my hand away. "Now," I said, "you tell me to choke you." So he did. "Now tell me to take the hand away." He did. "Now tell me to choke you." I did. | You find out what is the goal of everybody's motion. You start mocking it up and you'll find out it's either stretched out dead or sitting dead still. That's in this society their goal of motion. What's their tolerance of motion? They get a little bit agitated when people get up and start walking around, that's all. So, you have a problem there immediately with your preclear. |
Ran a bracket. You get the idea? Just a silly one. You don't have to worry about pcs. Now that you know something about the center pinning of action itself, there's no reason at all why you should be worried about giving people phrases inside a session or yapping at them too hard. Now, I've told you that you can evaluate for a preclear after he's been shifted around the universe by you a few times. Well, the only thing that will happen in that case, if you tell him something off the groove, something which is antipathetic to your own process, even jokingly, he's liable to take you seriously. So just cut down exterior or extraneous, rather, communication to him. Just don't chatter at him. Now, I may not have made that too plain this morning. But don't be careful of him. You get the idea? Like "I don't dare repeat phrases to him. I don't dare run an engram at him. If I sit here, and so forth, why, he's liable to get an idea - he's terribly antipathetic to women, therefore I have to be careful not to be a woman while I'm processing. I'll talk to him man to man," or something on this order, see? | Your preclear is surrounded all the time with motion. He wants no motion so he starts resisting everything that has motion. The only things that have motion are things that are alive, so your preclear is resisting life. That's the way it winds up. It's both simple and elementary. |
To hell with it. Your technique is more powerful than the errors that could be made with it. Now, that's a good thing. Don't - don't get timid. Most of you aren't using sufficient force in your processing. You're going too - slow and you're not using sufficient force. I'm giving you the same comment I gave you the other day. You're doing lots better, but not near good enough yet, see? Let's start to work up here on a level of... | Now, as we look over this whole scene, we find out, then, the rehabilitation of motion in a preclear as directly as possible wipes out the significance of the hidden standard, acceptance level, and so on. We don't have to think. We can look. So, therefore what we need is a technique which immediately hands out these various factors of motion. And it will remedy - in remedying motion, it remedies identification, beingness, scarcity, all these other things. But it must be objective motion. It can't be a subjective technique. Got to be an objective technique. |
Now, on doing an assessment, you will very often hit the center button of a case - ping. You just hit it - bang, see? And yet, if the center button were VII or VIII, you could practically spin this pc by running a roughy on him right off the bat. You have to be willing to go ahead and go on and spin him by running a roughy right off the bat; or be sensible and give him a little Straightwire first. Settle him out; square him around. You'd make it easier on yourself if you gave him a little Straightwire. It's a more gradient scale. But you can always do something. You can always do something. | Well, the technique to be desirable would have to include in it, to be very desirable, all the eight dynamics and their inversion. Isn't that right? So, we'd have to run the technique with regard to the dynamics. |
There's an old cavalry - this one too - there's an old cavalry - I mean, I guess it's an infantry manual phrase. And it says that any plan, even poorly conceived, is better than none if carried out with diligence and intention. Any plan is better than none if carried out with diligence and intention. | Now, I gave you a little bit of a forward parade on this and you ran Washington Monument, Empire State Building and various planets and so forth. You probably saw some increase of action and motion in cases, didn't you? You saw people bettering on this, didn't you? |
So no matter - if you get all looped up on some case or you're tremendously emotionally involved - all of a sudden you're sitting there and you get emotionally involved about this because there's been a terrific amount of pressure put to you. This person was about to commit suicide or you've let yourself into some kind of a level like that and you wish to - you wonder, "How the hell did I ever get here?" and "I can't possibly get out of it," and you can't think of anything to do because you might be tired or something like this. Why, you simply just get any plan, no matter how poorly conceived, and carry it into action. That's better than no plan. Just get some kind of an idea of what you're doing, and you say, "Well, we'll give this guy - we'll give this guy five minutes of Straightwire and then we'll give him five minutes of 'Holding the back corners of the room.'" Then, by God, if you've made up your mind to do that, why, don't shift in midflight. Just do it. Just give him five minutes of Straightwire and five minutes of "Holding the back corners of the room." | Well, if you're going to be selective about all this and if you're going to include every case in and give every case benefit, then you'll have to take each case as its level of inversion - take it at its level of inversion and do the same technique at its level of inversion. How would you do that? |
So, six minutes deep into the processing, you decide he's not going to follow - show any improvement at all because his attention span is too close, and so on. Well, you don't have to be bulldog and so forth and go right on through just because of that. If it becomes impossible, it becomes impossible. But remember that it's better if you just carry it right on through because the six-minute mark is not the ten-minute mark. And at the end of ten minutes he might be in beautiful condition. | Then you'd also take into consideration certainty. You wouldn't give him too much uncertainty in the process. |
Any plan, no matter how badly planned, is better than not doing nothing about nothing. Now, you'll find yourself in hot water with this technique every once in a while. Life is not quiet, life is not dull using this type of processing. But you should know this: that the very light levels of this process are always applicable. | So, let's take two present time spaces with which the preclear is familiar and have him be in one and then be in the other and then be in one and then be in the other and then be in one and be in the other. Two present time spaces, like this classroom or hotel. See? One to the other, one to the other, one to the other, one to the other, one to the other, one to the other. As fast as he could take it. This is exteriorized or interiorized. The technique we're looking for is the one that won't let the boy come back here. You understand? |
What would you do with a psycho who kept flying around the room? You started to process somebody and you didn't realize he was a psycho. You didn't see that wild light in his eye and the sweat pouring down the back of his neck. And he started flying around the room... And you find that you weren't processing the wife of - the lady who is the wife of the general manager of the Fooba corporation, and you are only processing her because he asked you because he was interested in putting in an industrial communication system. And you all of a sudden find yourself with a - with an electric shock, insulin shock case and one of the hottest psychos you ever ran into. You've been roped in, but hard, but plenty. She's two days out of the sanitarium and still screaming, and yet you didn't notice this; she was dressed in dinner clothes. This will happen to you every once in a while. | Two rooms, two spaces with which he's familiar. Now, let's take two people near present time with whom he's familiar, people he's seen recently, preferably familial line: Papa or child, Mama or child, or one side or the other of it. He has a pretty good idea where these people are. He's not far off on where these people are. You got that? He knows where they are, he hasn't any doubt about it. |
You'll give this little, light demonstration and find yourself in hot water. You just don't look before you jump. But there's no reason to look before you leap. The question is just don't leap, just do it. All right. | Now, remember if Papa is dead, there's a lot more certainty about running dead Papa than Mama who is alive and might be moving around. So, you have him be back of his body and then be back of Mama's body and then back of his body and back of Mama's body, if Mama's moving around. If you want to get real good certainty on it, however, if Papa's been buried for sometime and he knows where the cemetery is, just have him be just back of Papa's body and back of his own body and back of Papa's body and back of his own body and back of... Papa isn't going to move. All right, that takes care of familial line. And if he suddenly starts having a strange idea toward his own body right about that minute, you've just started in getting someplace. |
And you've asked her to do this process and she's just not vaguely in communication on the thing and so forth. What would you do? What would you do? She's not in communication. She can't think about it. She won't do anything. She won't obey what you're doing. Did it ever occur to you that you could pick her up and put her in chair one and then pick her up and put her in chair two and then pick her up and put her in chair one and then pick her up and put her in chair two and pick her up and put her in chair one and then put her in chair two, and the first thing you know, she'll notice the room. She will! There's nothing easier than this. Now, that's about the lowest level of gradient scale you can get. You kick the corpse from one chair to the other chair. But supposing she weighs three hundred pounds and you only weigh a hundred and twenty or something? Well, damn it, at least shove her from one end of the couch to the other. | Now, as you do these techniques, you'll find that roads and pictures of them begin to show up in facsimile form. So, of course, it necessarily would follow that the next thing you do is to get rid of motion itself in this universe as a particle, and so you would work on this. |
When you start determining her actions, she'll pay attention to you. Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that you'd hit a man on the jaw who was - who was getting real upset and floundering all over the place and screaming and yelling at you, but I have noticed an immediate calm ensue such an action. | And what would you do? You'd take a familiar stretch of road as one place to be and then another familiar stretch of road as another place to be. Not the same road by the way. They should be roads between two different towns. And just get him over one road and then over the other road and over one road and over the other road, until he can take that real fast. |
I tell you, I - one day an alcoholic - met an alcoholic; he'd never seen me before. I didn't even have time to fix him in the eye the way the bullfighters fix their bulls, you know? I had no time for anything. I entered the room and there was a tremendous crash over on the right side of me and the pitcher had hit the wall. He'd been in that room for three days chained up by his wife. Oh boy, this was a real picnic, a real picnic. I didn't know what I was letting myself - "Would you come over and see John? He's been wanting to see you." He didn't hear of me from Adam, see? He didn't know who I was. He didn't want to see anybody. All he wanted was a drink! And the instantaneous response was simply to - as he made the second lunge - was to catch him on the point of one knee and the point of the jaw simultaneously and drop him on the bed. | You'll find out that an awful lot of cars and an awful lot of stress and strain on travel will show up and an awful lot of space will start showing up because he's been traveling through space for a long time on mapped roads. |
By the way, this is very bad medicine, because his wife, no matter how much she wanted him electric-shocked, now hates you like poison because you've done him in, or something of this sort. You'll be in hot water if you do such a thing any time in this society. But every once in a while you have to protect yourself. Well, the funny part of it is the guy comes to very shortly afterwards and he listens to reason. Boy, is he reasonable! In fact, it's the source of all reason. | When you've done this road one, you're solving to a large degree the factor of implosion. Particles are racing back toward his windshield all the time when he's driving a car, in this society. When he's riding in trains, and so forth, things are always flying in on him and the only direction he's looking is forwards, so he thinks he's in an implosion. Got that? So we do roads. |
I would not be a bit surprised but what the whips of Bedlam were better therapy than most of those being used today. There's - certainly the whips of Bedlam were better therapy than the straitjackets they use in most of the states of the Union today. | Next thing we do, preferably... There are two places with which he's familiar and knows are still in existence - remember, get certainty on this, see. Where this technique breaks down - the only place this technique breaks down is when your preclear starts to use a level - I mean, starts to use, or you start to use, as an auditor, a level of uncertainty. The technique starts to break down right about there. You know, he isn't sure whether Papa is in Detroit or Chicago this week and yet you're saying, "Papa, your own body, your papa's body, your own body, your papa's body..." He isn't sure of it, see. And he keeps asking himself this question - he's too worried about it, so his processing will drop off. |
It's action. It's sensation. Now, I'm not advocating cruelty. I'm not advocating violence. I'm just saying you, as an auditor, don't happen to have any top limit. And right here and now we'd better get it through our heads that if we're going to accomplish any kind of a mission of higher motion and higher action, there's going to be casualties, not amongst you. But if you start running out a large number of people, you're going to have some of them flop. They'll flop for reasons that have nothing to do with you, but everybody will try to say they did. You won't have anything much to do with it. | If you find out that he isn't sure about Papa this week, well, have him use somebody that he can be sure of: the cop down on the corner - he can look out the window and see the cop down on the corner. Then have him sit back in his chair again and be back of his body and back of the cop's body and back of his body and back of the cop's body and back of his body and back of the cop's body and all of a sudden he'll exteriorize. Why? He's certain the cop's down there. |
This guy, he was in perfectly good shape until he came to your group. And you were processing him in a group and everything else and he was in perfectly good shape. Everybody says so. And all of a sudden you get a phone call from his wife and his wife says, "And ever since - ever since Georgie came home, we have been trying to get him back, but he just keeps talking and talking and talking. And it's the most strange and terrible thing and he's never done anything like this before, and it's because you've processed him in a group and you used that horrible thing called Scientology. I've tried to get him to promise not to go down there. I told him he'd go crazy if he did." You want to right away start asking questions. You want to say, "Well now, which - which break is this? What number?" As though this is important therapeutically. And they'll tell you oh, they've lost count. It's fifty-two or something like this or he does this every weekend or it will be something like this. But they'll try to hang you with it. The society will try to hang you in general with any sudden manifestation. | If he were to look out a couple of minutes later and find out that he'd been going back of a facsimile of a cop - the cop had departed a few minutes later - his tone would drop markedly. |
If you were to start running the processes which you have now for individuals on a group level, you'd get a lot of these phone calls. And you wouldn't run the cases out, you'd just run them so far and the guy'd appear to be all right when he left the Group Processing room, and when he got home, God help us! Therefore Group Processing at the level of Self Analysis, Short 8 and Six Steps to Better Beingness is pretty good. But Six Steps to Better Beingness is too tough if you've got a question about your group. | This fellow is taking - is doing this: You're pulling him out of the past - Geographical Processing - you're pulling him out of the past and the past facsimiles begin to fly off like mad. So you're eventually going to have to run him all over the universe on this basis. But you do various things. You have churches: You have him be in this church and then be in that church and then be in this church and then be in that church - two churches with which he's familiar. |
If you know members of your group, you can use Six Steps to Better Beingness. If you don't know members of the group, you sure better use Short 8. | And then you have him be in some government place or other and then in some other government place or other. |
All right. A psycho can't tolerate Ten Minutes of Nothing. Possibly, unless you'd experienced processing people with it, you wouldn't have recognized its frailty is in that first step: Ten Minutes of Nothing. They can't take it. The bank starts falling in on them because they've got to have something. They don't know what it is, but they sure have got to have it. | Now, I leave it largely to your imagination how you get the eighth dynamic. How do you get the eighth dynamic in this society? Huh? |
All right. In handling cases, in handling cases in general, if you're going to use a beefed-up, skyrocket process and you're going to use a speedup process and if you're going to use an action and a motion process, then you had better maintain yourself in a pretty high level of action and motion. Furthermore, you shouldn't fool around with a case to get it up into a level of motion. You shouldn't keep victimizing yourself, in other words, by running cases which are running too slow, see? Because they'll slow you down and then you'll eventually agree with the case and you'll be running slower than molasses and nothing's going to happen. What you want is action and motion. | Male voice: God and the devil? |
It would be ideal if you could take the people you were going to process and put them in a group and process them up into a high level of motion so they would all have a high level of motion and communication and then you'd process them. That's before you had to address them individually or before you had to suffer from the communication lag. Unfortunately there wouldn't be any reason to process them individually if you did this. Because that's the goal that you're trying to accomplish. You're trying to get these people into fast, high communication. | Male voice: Heaven and hell? |
All right. Whenever you start processing a preclear, you're going to find yourself confronted with the first decision: Am I going to process him or not going to process him? That's your first decision. It's up to you how you answer that. Very much up to you how you answer it. But make sure you answer it. You know, I'm not saying that lightly. Make sure you answer that question: | Yeah, how do you do it? How do you get off that eighth dynamic? |
Am I going to process him or not? | Oh, don't do this to me. |
Because you'll find yourself going through the motions of processing him under the decision not to process him. Now, we're not dealing with the delicacy of a postulate. You get you up Tone Scale and you can fill a room with a postulate. I don't mean full of people, I mean full of postulate. | Maybe you're not familiar with Christian religion. See, we're not breaking down to Scientology and maybe it's just a breakdown on Christian religion. God is supposed to inhabit all of space in this universe; it's all his space. So what do you do? You just have the pc chasing around space - fairly definite locations within space, that's all - without any contact with Earth. MEST universe space, that's all, and that solves the eighth dynamic. |
You've got this poor, weak, floppy, flabby preclear sitting in the middle of the beingness of you, and you say, "I don't want to process this son of a bitch. Hell, bum show." Now that doesn't mean you have to restrain your thoughts from the preclear or put up any force screens on the matter. There's an easier way about it than this. You just make up your mind. You say, "I don't want to process you. Goodbye." See, that's simple. Why subject yourself to anything about this, see? "I just don't want to." | Now, what's the matter? Aren't you familiar with the Christian religion? Don't you know God is omniscient, omnipresent? |
Or, if somebody's got you under duress and you've got to process him anyhow, you just do all of your sighing before the session. And you say, "Well, let's see. What would happen if I fixed him up so that he was in better shape? I guess he looks like the truant officer who used to always be calling around at my house. I suppose that's got something to do with it. It doesn't matter. We'll free the guy up. All right. He's a tough case, I'll take off this afternoon and process him." Again, that's - we enter the second level. If you've said, "All right, I'll process him," okay, go on and process him. But don't process somebody that you've said, "I don't want to process him," and then go ahead and process him. You get the idea? Because that's a maybe. And you'll sit there trying to get a maybe result to make yourself right - Q and A. | Well, we've got a process there which takes into account these dynamics. It takes into account certainty. It takes into account motion. And it takes into account exteriorization. The subjective material will peel off. This technique does not end with the MEST universe - I give you that little word of warning - but you solve it with your preclear with regard to the MEST universe and you're all very much on the high road. You've taken a human being further than it was ever possible to take a human being before, in Scientology. It would just be idiotic to say "than he's ever taken before by psychotherapy" because the only place he's ever taken by psychotherapy, as near as I can figure out, was hell. |
All right, go - now, the second question you've got to answer is, "Am I going to straighten him up this afternoon or this week?" | Well, you got this one down? What's it solve? |
Now, you think I'm being funny, but right now you can say, "How long am I going to process this case before he springs out and is Clear?" Now, if your practice is going to ribbons because you keep processing everybody in ten minutes, you can say, "All right, we'll process him for an hour." But for heaven's sakes, don't say, "I will clear him in an hour," or "I will finish off the case with an hour's processing." Just make some kind of a very honest estimate. That's just a method of slowing you down, you see? Make a very honest estimate of how long you're going to be, and then you want to put in an hour with the case. Well, give him the first fifty minutes of Self Analysis, and clear him in the last ten. | Male voice: Motion. |
If you - if you're just bound and determined that you're going to process somebody on hourly assignments and so forth, out of honesty with yourself and so forth, you shouldn't check yourself back just to make a processing session pass. | It solves motion. That's right. It'll solve any scarcity by putting the guy in back of what's scarce. Have him put him in something that's scarce, that's all. And put him into something else that's scarce. And have him put between this place and that place and this place and that place so it solves everything that Acceptance Level Processing will solve and that Expanded GITA will solve. We got that? |
Now, to you people here, that doesn't mean too much, but you're going to be training people, and make sure you tell them that because the people you will be training may not be as high-level people or as ethical people as you are. This country does produce something below optimum every once in a while - crawl out from underneath stones. You'll process somebody well, for God's sakes tell them this. At least be honest with the amount of time you are really going to put in on the case. In other words, that's a plan of operation, isn't it? | Therefore, it's a very handy-jim-dandy little process. The only place you'd go wrong with this process is by making it uncertain for the preclear. |
One, you've got to decide - got to decide how long - pardon me, whether you're going to process him or not, and the next thing you've got to decide is how long you're going to take to spring the case. | Now, does this process qualify as to grade of case? Where would you start with a psycho? You'd start with a psycho by having him sit in one chair and then move over to the other chair. That's all you'd do with a psycho - one chair, another chair, one chair, another chair. And then all of a sudden get up to the point where they can get, "what wall," "what room," if you do this. Just two different places. You've gotten him into motion and given him the idea of motion. |
Another thing you ought to decide is how far you want to spring this case. Probably that's a simultaneous decision. "I want to process this case. I want to process this case so he'll stop worrying about his wife." And then you do just that. It doesn't matter what you do to make him stop worrying about his wife, but if you can't make a man stop worrying about his wife with ten or fifteen minutes of some of the oldest techniques you know, you ought to quit. Because that's too easy. That's real easy. And with Change Processing, you ought to be able to stop him from worrying about his wife in five or six minutes, unless it's the center of his case at which you will plunge him into his case and may find yourself taking considerably more time than that. There is that. | Now, is there any liability to this technique? Yes. |
And that is not a piece of randomity, by the way. You'll look at this guy and you know whether he's an inverted two or not. You can just look at him, and if he's having trouble with his wife and he's an inverted seven and you're going to process him to - so that he won't have any trouble with his wife, and the main difficulty he's having with his wife is she doesn't want him to be a mystic, you've got from seven back to two, fella! | Remember this: that the basic thing about evaluation is change in space. Change in space is basic evaluation. We'll go into that later much more arduously. But that thing which has changed the preclear in space a great deal can evaluate for the preclear. You follow that? |
So, an assessment of the case is what establishes "What am I going to do for him?" So that's a decision, really, that you don't make simultaneously. You make it after you've looked the guy over. | So, when you halt at the quarter point or eighth point on the process, the auditor is in a good situation to tell the preclear that pink is green. And the preclear will really have to believe him. He would! But fortunately you carry it up above a certain level and all evaluation blows. |
The next thing that you'll find yourself doing with a case is deciding how much you're going to be restimulated by him. You probably think I'm joking with all this. I'm trying to keep you in contact with the human race and trying to keep you from being nailed at the same time by human foibles. | Now what's wrong with your case? Has everybody been evaluating for the case and invalidating the case? Well, "invalidation" is fear of force and "evaluation" is fear of change in space. Got that? "Evaluation" is fear of force and - I mean "invalidation" is fear of force and "evaluation" is change in space. Evaluation is change in space, that's all, and you can work this down. |
You make all these decisions yourself and they only carry into effect when you make them. You may not realize that entirely right this minute. But are we going to make with this case an Operating Thetan? If so, then remember that it takes you as much time as it takes you to make an Operating Thetan. You're going to invert every single condemned dynamic from eight back to one. And you're going to push up into a good level of beingness at least from one to three to make an Operating Thetan. And it isn't that that's going to take a long time. That has nothing to do with it. It's going to take plenty of drill, though. Because you're going to have to rehabilitate him in the MEST universe almost across the boards. So there's a little time involved in drilling. | A guy doesn't want to go back. He doesn't want to return down his time track. He can't recall, in other words, get back - it's just your geographical location and where Mama really fixed up the kid was, "Well, when you were a little boy and we lived over on Katzenjammer Avenue..." |
But more than this, you're doing it with him in an environment which is restimulative to him: his home and his food and so on. He's in a body. He's around a body. He's still eating. He still has human interests and all these sort of things. And you can expect him to slip and slop and slide and he'll go for three, four days and you'll see him. He never gets into really bad condition but you'll keep estimating it. And every time you estimate him, he will have changed a little bit from exactly what you expected. Why? His self-determinism starts getting up higher and higher and higher. And you're going to have to kick him over hump after hump where he redecides to be human or something. Then you just kick him up the line. | "Mama, we didn't live on Katzenjammer Avenue." |
So this is not really a project to which you assign time. And it's a finite result which is more of an ideal result. We're going to push this guy up so high he'll remain stable. Of course, we probably overestimate it and when we pushed him up so high we were just pushing him through the roof. | "Oh, yes, we did." |
That's a very critical level you're trying to measure. You're saying, "We're going to push this fellow up to this height and then we're going to keep him in communication all the time with the body." That's real, real rough. | If he'll just admit then that he is wrong on this, he's a sunk duck, see, because she's evaluating spaces they've occupied. This boils down to space, evaluation and space - these two things - we've got to go into that later, but I really don't have to because it's the subject of a PAB, which I think you have. It's a very long and involved PAB, I think - what is it, PAB 8? |
Now, it's much better to pick out something that is wrong with a preclear and call that end of case, and then not tell him so. He said, "I have these terrible, terrible humerasoids and I don't know quite how to get rid of them or what I'm going to do." And all he can talk about is that. | Male voice: Eight. |
Well, you happen to notice - you happen to notice something about his skin. And you decide that you're going to process him until he gets a certain skin color. Now, I wasn't joking the other day when I said I processed this girl until her eyes were hazel again. I don't know whether her eyes stayed hazel or not, that's beside the point. That's just how long I decided to process the girl. I just simply decided I would change her eye color from washed-out blue to hazel, and succeeded in doing so but it took me quite a while. But nevertheless, it was end of project. The case is now completely off my conscience. If she walked out underneath a bridge tomorrow, it would have no effect upon me at all because that's an end of case. And for Christ's sakes get what this is. This is end of cycle. | Male voice: Mm-hm. |
Don't let your preclear - please, if this afternoon I teach you nothing else, hear this - don't let your preclear go on and on and on as an unfinished cycle of action. Finish the cycle every session. | Eight carries it all down to the reductio ad nauseam on the subject of change in space for evaluation. So remember that your auditor, with this process, has a lot of power on evaluation. |
And how do you finish the cycle? The person comes up and is a preclear. Pick something minor on the case and do it. Say you're going to do something for sport or for action on the case. But pick what you're going to do in that case at that time and kick it out of your mind. And by golly, you won't be going home at night worrying about preclears. And you won't be walking away from group meetings worrying about preclears. | So just move the guy around. Don't start commenting or evaluating. You can evaluate, see, like, "I think you're in pretty good condition," after you've moved a guy all around and he's still real groggy. This really has an impact - his doubtfulness about his own condition and other things and so forth; anything is liable to key in. I mean, the guy is in a perilous state at a very early stage of this process. After a couple of hours of it, this isn't true, but during the first half-hour it has a real interesting effect. |
You say, "I'm going to process these people until they cheer." Or, "I'm going to process this group till that old lady, third from the back in that row in that side of the room, until she s wearing a beatific smile." All of a sudden it's still fifteen minutes to go until the end of the Group Processing and you've got this beatific smile, you see? And you say, "End of process." And so you just give them "end of session" from there on, you see? Just slow it down to nothing and just finish it off. You've done your processing cycle. | This, by the way, can be reverse vectored and used as hypnosis the like of which you never heard of and is, by the way, a dramatization for some preclears on being moved from here to there. And all of a sudden they will get that dramatization in mind, they'll try to go back to Mars or someplace. In fact, as the process is used, I'd say every few preclears, every few hundred preclears certainly, you're just going to have someone do a bunk. That's British for "beat it" - "do a bunk" - technical phrase over in Great Britain. "He did a bunk." That means he pulled out of his head and kept on going past Arcturus. |
And somebody comes around later and says, "You know that Group Processing you've been giving out? That Group Processing you've been giving out hasn't been doing me a bit of good at all. And as a matter of fact I was talking the other night to Josephine and Josephine says she hadn't been getting any results from it either." | No, he'll be - he'll go home. He'll go home to Mars for a new body or something of the sort, because this is just - this is exactly what's been happening to him 74 trillion years. Somebody comes along to him in Arslycus, and they say, "Now, what you do is, when you go out that way, you move back here again and they put you in another body and then you go out there and they put you in another body, then you back there..." and goes on right in this civilization now according to para-Scientology. Of course, I wouldn't take any responsibility or ownership for that, except that it's true. |
You say, "Is that so?" You're not emotionally involved. You've finished your cycle of action on that Group Process. You made the old lady smile. | Male voice: How about getting this fellow to move behind one auditor of whom he's certain, another auditor of whom he's certain. That would knock out quite a few locks, I should think. |
Finish your cycles of action, and then you don't keep laying them up; and that is the only way you enter a dwindling spiral on processing, is your first failure compounds with the next failure and with every preclear going on as an unfinished case. Week in and week out and month in and month out, your first preclear is still on the back of your neck. | Um-hm. That's a very bottom level - between the two. |
So just pick out what you're going to do and call your shots. Get to be as good an auditor as Hoppe is a billiard player. When you say the fifth ball in the end pocket, knock it in, dust off your hands, bow politely and walk away. | If you were to put one person to one side of the room and one person at the other side of the room and have him shift from behind one person to behind the other person, you have a process. |
I may be talking to you about something you wonder why I'm talking to you like this. I'm just talking to you on this order, not because I think you're going to do something illegal or unethical or something with regard to a preclear. I'm going to tell you that there's only one aberration as far as ethics is concerned and that's to deny yourself. And you start kidding yourself about what you're doing in processing and you've set yourself up right down there at the end of the alley to be hit by every cannonball that comes your way. Don't kid yourself. And that isn't me talking. That's just fact. | Remember now, don't - don't get your imagination bogged down with this just because it's a real hot process. It has variations because of the inverted dynamics. This process is matched to the inverted dynamics and when matched to the inverted dynamics produces fabulous results. |
You get up and - you get a thetan and get a thetan terribly concerned with going over and straightening out the Moscow situation? Oh yeah? He'd get over there and he'd say, "Okay, yeah, I was over in Moscow a few minutes ago." And he's really worked him up to where he's got real horsepower. He can make light bulbs light in the room and every other doggone thing, you see? This is a real hot boy. | You find out this fellow was inverted at seven and you're going to move him between two family members. He's not that well off; that's all. What would you do with him, inverted at seven? Well, look out the window or something and find a couple of church crosses or do something or other. Make two black crosses on a white piece of paper and put a cross on one piece of paper on one side of the room and a cross on the other side of the room or get a couple of crucifixes or - at the dime store - I think that's where they sell them, isn't it? And look out the window and find if; anywhere around the place, there's a couple of churches where they have spires and crosses. Just don't get off of that seven because he isn't going to get off of it. |
"Why don't we send him over to Russia and straighten everything out?" See, you aren't up to his level yet. And he goes over there and pretends that he's doing something. "Yeah, sure, sure, sure." It's not that important to him. And he sits there for a little while, and so forth, and he finally comes back and he says, "You know what? You know what? The women - the women around the south side of Moscow have fleas in their hair." | You'll find somebody else that's bad off on the second dynamic and, boy, you try to move him around with adults or something like that and yet he has some connection with children. Well, move him behind a child and behind another child and so on. |
You say, "Oh, come, come. Here we're waiting for this world revolution. We're trying to straighten this out. Now go back over and do something about it." | You'd say, well if he's bad off - a homo - the second dynamic, he's a homosexual or something like that - moving him back of a couple of children certainly wouldn't solve... Oh yes, it would! Because the second dynamic is the second dynamic. It has to do with sex and children. You just take it at its outer perimeter which is children. And you'll find all sorts of things will happen in the case. |
"Okay." Very sincere. They go back over and say - and all of a sudden, if his body is in any kind of communication with him and at all responsive, he might start to assume a very pleasant smile; something of that order. You wonder what the devil he's doing now. "Well, he's sure - he's sure busted up the Russian government now. Yes sir. Now here he goes. Here he goes. Gee, he's getting a big kick out of that." | Now, you're not asked to compute very much beyond where is this fellow sitting on the inverted dynamics. And then let's be original enough in order to adapt two-place processing - change of place processing - to this case and let's make sure we run all dynamics, that's all. So simple. |
The fellow comes back and says, "Gosh, Cossack ponies ride fast!" | But it leaves you with the use of enough imagination, really, to what you're going to put him behind and your imagination on it is monitored only by this, is make sure it's awful damn certain to him. Because the more certain it is that the stuff is there, the more certain he will be that something is happening. So don't plunge him into a well of uncertainty and expect him to get better; he won't. |
"Oh, hell." | Male voice: Do you restrict this to working with pairs or do you work in little circles? |
You try to explain to a person like that and say, "Life is serious. This is real. This is important." | No sir. You can work exactly this way with groups with this class, but you wouldn't be able to do that... |
He has lost the meaning of those words, fortunately. He's not convinced. You've unconvinced him. But he can have a hell of a lot of fun. And he can be very sincere. He can actually be tremendously - but don't ask him to jibe in with 1.5 and 1.1 purposes like "let's surreptitiously knock out the sultan of Pagmor, because we can do something or other." He owns - this thetan owns all of Pagmor. You get the level of responsibility? You're saying he should do something about Pagmor in order to free Pagmor. We could only free Pagmor from this thetan because he went over and took a look at it, and after that he owned it. That's as much as he ever wants to own anything when he's up Tone Scale. Good place! | Male voice: No, what I mean is pairs of places like just back and forth, back and forth or a triangle... |
And a guy's liable to get reasonable too. He's liable to start looking at both sides of things, saying, "Well, you know, the guy probably does have a heck of a time with all the crooks and criminals around there," and so forth. "Gee, I saw one guy down on the street. He had these great big mustaches - these huge mustaches. Had fleas in it." Just not serious. | Oh, you can go into a triangle of places and you will be all right, but the funny part of it is that two-place processing is motion. That's why I called it "two-place processing" rather than "many-place processing." |
You realize - you realize that a human being takes something seriously that you probably will stop taking seriously. The only thing serious that you can really do is deny yourself And if you go on denying yourself endlessly, you can pretend to, but for heaven's sakes remember you did. Because that's how you got into the cycle. | This is a motion process which - well, you want to get technical, okay - it is a process which is run in space which is already determined to exist. And three-place and on up Change Processing is run when you're trying to get drills to create space. And that's another process and is an advance of this process. But this is just to solve motion, that's all. |
So when you start to process a preclear, you can kid him all you want to. And you can say, "Why these techniques, yes, yes. These techniques come from the top of the Himalayan chain." "Really?" “And these are all refined and they're all this way and they're all that way," and so forth, and you can tell him anything you want to. But you're sure you know what you're doing. That's the only thing you do because only in that way will you get that result upon him. And the people you train are the ones that have to have this pounded in. Not you that I'm training. So remember it on a second echelon. | And please, don't forget the vehicles. "Let's find one train and let's find the other train. Let's find the other - first train, let's find the second train. Let's find the first train. Oh, you've got them both on the same track. Well, to hell with that. Get over there on the Union Pacific for that second train. You got one on the Union Pacific? Okay, one train and then the other train, then one train and then the other train and then one train and the other train." |
It's just that. Make up your mind whether you're going to process him or not. Then when you've made up your mind, why, figure out what you're going to do for him and then figure out how long it's going to take you, and you don't do it with figuring at all, you just forecast it. And you can have a pleasant afternoon or a pleasant ten minutes. | He says, "My God, I used to hate trains!" |
You know I think we found out this morning that time is a very speeded up factor, didn't we Bill, on these processes. | One car and then another car and one car and then another car, and both the cars are sitting still, but every time he gets the two cars, my God, he gets this horrible sensation that he's always gotten and associated with being bored. It's motion, motion in a car. It starts running off. |
Male voice: Exactly. | Do you run anything off? Do you double terminal anything? Do you pay any attention to sudden convulsions and nip-ups on the part of the case? No! You can expect very thoroughly these things to happen. You'll only get the case in trouble by switching off onto some other process, because you started in with a powerful process. Now, don't think it can patch itself up suddenly with a very weak, flimsy little process, because it won't. |
So, that's not important, how long we take. If we take longer, do it. But finish a cycle of action every time you do anything. | You can fully expect your preclear to get into states of revulsion against his own body, to not want anything to do with his own body, to feel very mystified about it, to become disconnected with his body, to be unable to move the hands of his body and so forth. Therefore, it's not a technique to be used by amateurs. |
Say, "Well, we're going to process this preclear until she puts on her hat." That's a real safe one. Because you simply, at the end of the thing, tell her to put on her hat. | I don't think anything terribly dramatic will happen in this class, but let me assure you that if you used a process of this magnitude on preclears walking in off the street, that about every fifth or sixth preclear would stand your hair on end for a couple of minutes. They'd say, "I'm in the grave. I can't get out." |
And if all this goes wrong and you forget it all, just get back about ten, twelve feet from your head and zap the ridge where it all laid up and blow the postulates. But don't let the thing stick around. It's - no sense in it. | And you'd say, "That's all right, just be behind your body." |
You can build up a pattern of processing which can become in itself, iniquity itself, as far as you're concerned. You can say, "Well, I have to process this preclear," - you're going to find this out not too long from now - "I have to process this preclear and get him to do this and get him to do that, because this poor preclear has an earache." | "That's just it, this is my body. It's right here." |
By golly, if a few weeks from now you can't do this, I'd disown you. He's got an earache. And you haven't - don't want to fool around with it so you just blow the ridge. You got that? You just look over and blow the ridge. You don't reach over and blow the ridge. You just look at him and blow the ridge, if you want to, because there's no kickback. If you really want to process right and handle energy right, do that. | And you say, “And where is it lying right now?" |
[Please note: At this point in the lecture, a gap exists in the original master recording. We now return to the class where the recording resumed.] | "Well, in a coffin, of course. It's - I can taste the face powder." Little things like that. |
The entire point of this October the 19th talk is on the introduction of a workable process and trying to fit it into your own frame of reference and trying to fit it into the society's frame of reference. | And he might just go out of communication and be completely silent and you'd say, "Well, I guess we buried him in Keokuk. Well, next preclear." |
You'd be very surprised to find out that when you have a workable process - and processes that you'll be getting from now on are pretty workable - that the main difficulty with the process is trying to fit it into the society. It's what I started talking to you about this morning - acceptance level. | Leave the body there. Don't let anybody bury the body because as long as it stays warm another thetan will come along and pick it up. |
What's the acceptance level of a pc that you suddenly treat and he's well? You treat him pretty fast and he's well. There's a lot more you have to know to really get an instantaneous level on a process. But what's his acceptance level? | Okay. It's all yours. That's the end of the lecture. |
If that were reduced to about thirty seconds, you'd better go buy a turban. That's all that society would accept from you. They wouldn't accept that you were a doctor or were using a science or anything else. They would go immediately into apathy about you - would be the second manifestation.
The truth of the matter is we could take these processes right now and all of us get white robes and gold belts and turbans and so forth and go around the world and change the civilization. There'd be no trouble with this outside of the fact that it would drive everybody and every civilization that you hit into apathy. You would drop into the immediate lap of the Catholic church. You would have made superstition and sainthood come true. And if you've ever had any difficulty explaining Scientology to a fairly well-educated person, think of the difficulties you'd have explaining it to somebody from the Bronx. You get that? It would be a rough deal, see, trying to put it across to them that this and that and so forth.
You could actually - you could actually be a great faith healer. You could actually be a miracle worker or anything you want to be in this category. The main danger is starting to think of yourself as one. Because that is a limited beingness. There's nothing duller than accepting the sick when you yourself don't have an acceptance level of sick bodies. And it's going on accepting sick bodies ad infinitum that spins these people in.
So what you do, what you do is to a large degree your business, but don't deny yourself in the process of doing it. Know what you're doing, say what you're going to do. Even if you don't tell anybody but yourself, at least tell yourself And always end the cycle of action every time you process somebody. Even if you - even if it's as weak as this: "I'm going to make him feel a little better." At least tell yourself that's what you're going to do.
And then if you never bother to ask him what you did - if you never do - you never become an effect of the preclear.
Please, I hope to get this class up to a level where you never have to ask how you are. I do just to be polite. A little bit later on we'll start reading - reading pcs. That's an interesting subject all in itself. You know whether he's good or bad or indifferent.
For instance, a pc was in class this morning - I won't say who - that told me, or mentioned (didn't tell me directly, particularly): "Terrible condition, just terrible shape," and so forth. And yet do you know that two very significant, terrific things have happened to this pc? Very, very terrific - all indexed by skin color. The pc is suffering from a sudden shift of endocrine system. Of course - upset! They always are for two or three days. The GE's endocrine system does a complete flip.
And when the GE's endocrine system starts doing this, there's going to be some racketing around, believe me. What's the index? Skin color. You can tell by the difference of the translucence and color of skin, but particularly its translucence, how the pc is.
When you ask the pc how the pc is, you invalidate yourself, just bluntly and flatly, because you're asking, not looking.
You don't worry about his subjective reality because you can see it. Now, I don't ask you to look at energy and go into mumbo-jumbo particularly, but you should be able to shift your wavelength and take a look at somebody.
Of course, you'll run this one as soon as you start doing that. You'll go through some kind of a phase and start processing a preclear and you know what's wrong with the preclear; you can just take a look at him, see?
For instance, I diagnosed a preclear this morning without looking at him with my body. Called one of you in who processed the preclear for a few minutes while I went out in the anteroom, while I was sitting at my desk, and took a look at the preclear - took a look at the facsimiles sitting in front of the preclear - and then came back and laid down the diagnosis. And I think it was the proper diagnosis, wasn't it?
Well, there was nothing much to this because there's no trick to doing it. It's not a trick. It's just looking, not thinking about it. It's being willing to look at a facsimile, being able to look at a ridge, look at what's around the preclear's head and so on. Of course, you do this when you're pretty well down Tone Scale, you can practically flip yourself. You can practically go crazy doing this, as long as there's a big uncertainty to it. But you shouldn't start doing this, really, until you get the same level of certainty if you look at the desk, is the desk there? Yes, the desk is there. Well, that's perfectly certain, so you can use the technique. But don't use it on this basis: "There's a word in the air."
"Oh, is there a word in the air? What does the word say?"
"Well, a word is just in the air, there. Can't you see it?"
"No, I just really can't imagine seeing it there. It's pretty thin, and so forth."
"Well, if you strained real hard you could see it."
This is mysticism. What's the difference between mysticism, reading ridges and that sort of thing, and seeing auras and all that sort of thing? It's because they don't see them. They don't see them. They just don't, that's all.
A person that's really taking a look - they're not looking. The way you tell is the person's communication lag. The person who has a terrific communication lag and is talking in uncertainties all the time, saying - not knowing whether they did this or did that, and has this long communication lag, and then they tell you they're looking at somebody's aura! Oh yeah? They're not. They can't see!
How do you establish whether or not a person sees? Well, sometimes you can just tell whether or not he's looking. See how simple all that is? But we're right off, in even talking about it, into an uncertainty because if you can't see a ridge and know that it's - you're looking at a ridge to the same degree and level that you see this desk in looking at the desk, you have no business looking at ridges. See this?
If you can't, out of your body, go into the waiting room, take a look at the pc, size it up, take a squint at the facsimile, go around in back of his eyes and see what the score is with that and come on back with a complete diagnosis and then write down the man's life history and his engram bank and what he did for breakfast, you ought to quit - if you can really look. You'd set yourself up for a marvelous seer.
I don't care what you do. And I don't really care what you do because life is life. But I do care about you as individuals, and your state of case and state of beingness and so forth goes along just as well as you go along with a certainty of accomplishing what you say you're going to accomplish. And if you just make a practice of doing what you say you're going to do, you will be in wonderful condition.
And if you take it all on randomity and hit or miss and you're going to be the effect of the preclear and the preclear can get up and say, "I feel terrible," and this crushes you utterly, and you don't know how the preclear feels or anything, you're in a big uncertainty.
If you say to yourself, "I'm going to make this fellow feel a little better," or "I'm going to process him until he gets up out of the chair," anything, you finish the cycle of action and the postulate at the moment. That's what you ought to be doing.
Now, you should be giving some attention right now to how you process people. Do you process them sloppily? Slowly? Is your mind all foggy when you start in on a guy, or is it bright and alert? Do you say what you're going to do? Do you actually forecast a result? Do you have an attitude inside yourself that means the guy's going to be well, or you're going to break his neck? What kind of an attitude do you have inside yourself? Well, let's introvert to the degree of asking, huh?
Go back to what you're doing now, and this afternoon, please, while auditing, do this: Look at yourself to find out what you are doing. Just look. Just look, that's all. And as pcs, look at the auditor and find out if auditor presence does have anything to do with your own case. You're all high enough now so that you won't have to worry about it.
Okay? | |
Thank you very much. | |
