CERTAINTY - MAYBES, PROBLEMS, CASE ENTRANCE | REVIEW ON HAVINGNESS AND DEMONSTRATION | ||
A Lecture Given on 4 February 1954 61 Minutes | A Lecture and Demonstration Given on 4 February 1954 60 Minutes | ||
Okay. This is the 4th of February, 1954, and you won’t like what I’m going to say this afternoon. | And this is February the 4th, 1954. | ||
Female voice: No? | Want to give you a very simple talk this morning, it isn’t about anything in particular that you don’t know, but it might have to do with a lot of things you haven’t considered. | ||
No. Your ability to follow simple directions is horrible, very horrible. Now, I have given you a lot of processes. You normally take the last thing I have said and apply it to a preclear, I suppose. That’s all right. But during this Unit I have not been giving forth processes which were invalidated by tomorrow’s lecture. Things I’ve been giving you, such as validation of life-and I thought I covered that fairly well and showed you the liability of validating a part of life too thoroughly. | The thing about communication, C to E and a line, should tell you immediately that space is the common denominator to all communication. And an individual who has such a thirst for mass and density that he is trying to close in density to him is, of course, going to run out of space, so he’s going to run out of communication. Now, you see why surfeiting the appetite of the individual in terms of mass and density and matter is necessary if you’re going to run through havingness to shorten up and straighten out this fellow’s communication lines. | ||
Let’s take Courage Processing. Covered that rather widely and demonstrated to you and gave you examples much earlier in this Unit that if you were to get somebody to put fear in the walls, who was occluded-just put fear in the walls for about forty hours or something like that-weird, strange and terrible things would happen to his case. As a matter of fact, we’ve gotten some good exteriorizations just on that. | As long as he has a tremendous thirst for havingness or is trying to block off a lot of havingness and so on, he is to some degree or another shortening space. | ||
So we do Courage Processing, which is the upper bridge to fear, and “wasting courage in brackets” does considerable for a case. It does strange and terrible things to a case. It gets him over this supercontrol mechanism. When you have a supercontrol case, he’s got hold of the body so hard, he’s afraid it’s going to flip-flop in some direction. | This should then give you the reason why we probably should try to remedy havingness. Remedying Havingness of course is an old technique. It’s SOP 3. The way we’re doing it, however, is considerably advanced, but we’re still doing the same thing, we’re remedying the scarcities. | ||
Now, how do you get rid of his flip-flops? He can’t turn on nerve enough to exteriorize or nerve enough to turn the body loose, or so forth, without driving it even further toward the flip-flop. Now, I thought you could see that rather plainly. | Now, there’s only one important thing about havingness: I don’t care what the item is so long as it is dense and massive. That’s what you want to aim for. | ||
You start running courage on somebody-wasting courage or running courage in some other fashion, and serenity- and you drive the body across that bridge of pain into fear. And the body starts to feel like it’s going out of control. | Now, some of you probably still make the mistake of thinking you can remedy bodies, you know, remedy havingness in terms of bodies or remedying havingness in terms of pebbles or something. You can’t do it, you’ll have to remedy it in terms of planets and masses-masses, big masses. You want to get into masses and densities as fast as possible. And the more bodies you run in, the more significance you’re going to have. | ||
Now, one of you just a couple of days ago put on a terrifically frantic exhibition out in the outer office and so forth, when it’s quite obvious what had happened. It should have been obvious, if not to the person, certainly to an auditor, in time to grab it. And that was the fact that somebody had run courage on this case, had run him into a flip-flop-you know, franticness of control-and had then never run the franticness of control. | Now, there’s two things-two factors involved in havingness and two factors involved in it concerning communication which should be quite obvious to you. And one of these is that the individual does have a tremendous thirst for MEST, he does have a tremendous thirst for it, he does want the MEST universe. This is unmistakable. But this will run on a reverse vector and he will say that he despises and hates the MEST universe. | ||
See, obvious that it must have-the Courage Processing was the one that was being run currently and this person all of a sudden is frantic. Now, why is this person frantic? Well, the person is frantic about control or state of beingness. | Well, can’t you see that his effort to contact and have part of the MEST universe brings about, every time he can’t have the MEST universe, a covert communication system known as eating, economics, all kinds of things. | ||
What made the person frantic? Running courage, of course. Because they’re holding on to the courageous ends of incidents, preferably. And you run a little bit of courage and, zing, in they’ll go to the rest of the cycle. Flip-flops. All right? | His effort to have the MEST universe has gotten so detached and so far away from the actuality that he goes through eating, economics, social structures of one kind or another and so on. | ||
Now, I talked to you some time ago about certainty. I’ve talked to you often about certainty. I said there wasn’t very much you could do with an individual unless you could get him certain about something. | Well, what’s driving him off? Actually, what’s driving him off-other life forms. It’s his own universe in each case. Because of automaticities and so forth, we won’t examine this any further. Other life forms, however, and the individual have engaged in a sort of a war to see who gets the MEST universe and this is the battle involved. | ||
Now, if a person wasn’t certain about something, well, the only little reservation is this: if you can get him to pull any kind of a mass in on him at all, it will, for a short rime alter his beingness. But, i£ it doesn’t result in a higher grade of certainty, you’ve done nothing. If it’s resulting in more uncertainty, you certainly better get into some certainty. | Therefore, the favorite trick of other life forms, particularly of his own species, is to yank his attention off the MEST universe onto themselves or onto life itself. And so we get the individual with a tremendous amount of life energy and darn little MEST—unapplied life energy which he’s sort of holding in a savings account or something of the sort. This is facsimiles arid all sorts of things. He just wants to save mass in case sometimes he wants to animate a planet all at once or something. Weird ideas he gets with regard to this. | ||
Now, there are cases walking around-please, please understand this-there are cases walking around who would feel marvelous if there was just one thing in the whole condemned universe of which they could feel entirely certain. The entrance of the case is obviously some certainty on something. Here we have a tremendous vista of life consisting of maybes-maybes in all directions. | But just in terms of attention, his attention for MEST is continually being snapped onto other life forms. The only thing that is (quote) “edible” about these other life forms is, of course, their MEST. So we have this tremendously covert line finally forming up where every time an individual tries to grab hold of some MEST, some other life form pulls his attention off the material universe. | ||
Now, what I’m trying to teach you, if I’m trying to teach you anything, is that the “maybes” of existence are the things which upset existence. The mind does not work well on “maybes.” Must at least have a “yes greater than no” or a “no greater than yes” to function at all. And this principle in Dianetics and Scientology goes back three years, with the first graphs I used to draw you on the board. | You can run this if you want to do a laborious job on it, which is not good therapy but is good investigatory therapy: Have a person put his attention on the floor and then shift his attention to his own level and then up. And put his attention on the floor and shift his attention to his own level and then up. And then get the idea that somebody else is out there putting his attention on his-have him put his attention on the floor and then have-somebody else lifts his attention to his own level and up. And the next thing you know, your boy is getting into restimulation all of his early material whereby his attention was yanked off MEST. | ||
You remember those graphs? It showed how an individual would plot data from center. And you had, to the right of that, Infinite Rightness and, to the left of it, you had Infinite Wrongness. To the right of it, you had Infinite Survival; to the left of it, you had Infinite Succumbness as unattainable absolutes. You remember this? | Now, if you watch a little kid around, a little kid in a fine state of degradation and forgetfulness and wipe out and so forth-he tries to start in fresh all over again. He goes out and he’s just as happy about MEST—he gets his face dirty and he gets his hands full of it and-any kind of MEST, it doesn’t matter what kind, he’s just happy and cheerful about it, he goes on. And now some other little kid comes along and tries to take it away from him. | ||
Well, until you can push the boy a little bit further from center toward rightness, he isn’t going to do a thing. Agreement with the MEST universe would be this sort of a thing: agreement with all those things which can be read out of the MEST universe in terms of behavior. You know, life versus the MEST universe. Life versus the MEST universe gets into this uncertainty: it can’t even have MEST. | This is the silliest thing in the world. You know, this little kid who has got his hands on this MEST is not at any moment going to absorb and take up all the MEST there is. | ||
Now, I was talking to you about that this morning. It can’t even have MEST. It’s got to eat something that ate something that ate something that ate something that ate something that sometime or another might have spit on a rock. And so we get this way off. | But you’d think so if you watched another kid or watched some parents. They’ve got to get his attention off of that MEST, that’s all. And they’ve got to lift his attention up onto something else, usually that he shouldn’t touch. | ||
Well, where is it drifting into? It’s drifting into an infinite maybe. This is riding center. What? What’s riding? Well, the fellow is alive and he wants something, but maybe it’s this and maybe it’s that and maybe he’s alive and maybe he isn’t alive. And we’ve got this total dependency for every breath of his livingness upon long suspended chains of life and death and “Maybe I’m surviving” and “Maybe I’m not” and so on. | Now, a child doesn’t differentiate in terms of MEST form. He doesn’t care anything about the form it’s in, particularly, as long as it’s just MEST, that’s all. And he’d just as soon break something as not, merely because he doesn’t care about the form. He rather instinctively feels he can put any of this stuff in any form he wants to, anyhow, so he doesn’t have to preserve the form. What he wants is MEST. | ||
“Maybe I’ll get something to eat tomorrow-maybe.” “Maybe-maybe if I tidy myself up a little bit, why, some nice guy will look at me.” “Maybe if I mend my manners and my personality a little bit, why, that girl will be up in the bedroom with me.” The factors with which Man deals ordinarily and commonly are factors which are endless maybes. | All right. He starts in then with solid matter, that’s what attracts his attention mainly, rather than space. His attention is never attracted by space because there’s no obvious barrier there. So he gets into a hectic state of trying to contact solid matter, because everybody pulls his attention off of it all the time. | ||
Now, out of this tremendous fabric of maybe, we have factors which are plus and minus. And the plus and the minus are desirable and the center line isn’t desirable. A fellow is either going to have something or he’s going to have nothing. The “maybe he’ll have something and maybe he’ll have nothing” is what’s driving him mad. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t. “Maybe they’ll kill me, maybe they won’t.” “Maybe I’ll have an accident, maybe I won’t.” No certainty. Plus and minus certainties. | The next thing you know, he’s holding in reserve or he’s going to, someday, contact the solid matter, but in the meantime he’s got to somehow or other handle or do away with the other life forms which are distracting him. And so he gets deeper and deeper in “be prepared,” you see. Preparation, preparation, preparation is the echo of this. What preparation really starts in as is “Let’s find some method to hold this in check and prepare some kind of a barrier or barricade to hold these people off so that I can contact this MEST and be left alone.” | ||
Certainty itself is knowingness. When we’ve abandoned certainty-you got it there in 16-G - when we’ve abandoned certainty as a concept, when we’ve abandoned this graph and we’ve abandoned everything in relationship to this, we’re doing what? We’re just floating down the stream with the rest of life in maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe. Now, how do you get out of that stream and sit on the bank and catch your breath? By getting certain of something. | And he gets this finally into “be prepared in life.” If he studies hard enough or if he does something or other or he works hard enough, someday he will be permitted to what? To touch matter. If he can just do away with or get important enough or be powerful enough in the face of other life entities that are around, or units, then eventually he will be permitted to touch matter. That’s his goal. | ||
And yet you guys, customarily-I’m sorry if I wrong one or two-customarily process individuals without any regard to certainty of what’s occurring. Preclear isn’t certain he put a mock-up there. | It’s a lost goal. Matter, of course, is only one part of the component parts of the MEST universe. These component parts are, of course, matter and energy and space and, then, in their motion and combination-time. All o£ these things are barriers of one kind or another. But the material of which the barrier called matter is made is something of which a thetan is very fond. He loves this stuff. | ||
The auditor says, “Put another mock-up there.” | Now, it causes him to close space. There’s much more space in this universe than there is matter. As a matter of fact, there’s practically no matter in this universe at all. And he’s trying to avoid these spaces and contact something in the spaces. His direction is always toward somethingness then, and not toward nothingness. So he begins to close distances and distance is the common denominator of all communication. | ||
So he puts another mock-up there. | So a process by this, a Straightwire Process, a very good one, is indicated: “Give me some distances you are not trying to close.” “Give me some distances you are not trying to open.” It will turn on some very juicy somatics, by the way. | ||
Now, does the auditor at any moment say, “All right. Where is the mock-up? Are you sure it is there?” | “Some distances you’re not trying to close,” “Some distances you’re not trying to open.” You see how that echoes against time. The particle-Time Processing that I gave you some time ago: “Two particles you’re not trying to move apart or that you don’t object to being together” and “Two particles that are apart that you don’t object to having apart.” And this will unlock the fellow from many places on the time track. | ||
The preclear, after fifteen hours of endless, pointless auditing, says, “Well no, I’ve never been sure of that mock-up or mock-ups. Or occasionally, once or twice, I’ve had a feeling there might be something there, but I didn’t know because I wasn’t sure because maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe.” You might as well have gone out on the front porch and whittled a stick for fifteen hours. | Well, if there is this hunger for matter, and demonstrably there is, and if the closure of space is such that it brings about an aberrated condition in the individual, since it stacks all of his engrams and his time track and everything else up, why, certainly we’d better enter the problem somewhere to answer up, to some degree, to the desires and appetites of our thetan so that he will thereafter be willing to open up some space. | ||
The clue of all auditing is the certainty of the individual and a technique which picks apart the uncertainties and establishes some certainties with the individual is the senior technique. | That’s rather easy to do if you start an avalanche on the individual. And you’ve got this avalanche running good and strong and you have him get up there and, you know, put some more into the avalanche and then finally get so he runs the avalanche himself. | ||
Now, how do we select the technique the case needs? We select it by finding what the case is certain of. We can enter certainties in some of the most remarkable ways. We can say, “All right. Look around you and see if you can find an area of nothingness.” | And by the way, if you start an avalanche and don’t have the individual add to it and then take it under his own control and start it himself, you know, and keep it going, why, you won’t take over the automatic machine. Because nearly all of his automatic machinery is trying to knock apart things which are liable to take things from him and to give him things which are massive and dense. And all of this machinery is categorized into mocking machinery and unmocking machinery, but nevertheless, the slant on the machinery is to give him something. | ||
And he finally spots one. | Well, the MEST universe aids and abets this like mad because it flows in on him from 360 degrees. And therefore, if you will look in the First Book, you will find where it says a river which is running in the same direction the engineer wants it to run, you know-gives you an example of how you can ease an aberration into an individual. | ||
Now you say, “Certain it’s there?” | You see, he wants the aberration and if it happens that all other forces parallel the direction of his desire, why, oh boy. We’ve got real strong stuff there. Well, the MEST universe directly parallels the direction of desire with its inflow. The individual wants this stuff. | ||
“Yes.” | Well now, it could be that the MEST universe, just by inflowing, has created an artificial appetite. Well, that’s theoretical, but as we test the preclear we find out that preclears do want this stuff, they do. And they say they don’t. And they say they want to get away from it and so forth. | ||
“Fine.” | Well now, what is this eatingness? As we get down into the early bank, we find that lichens and moss prepare MEST in some fashion and lichens and moss are then-then prepare the ground and leave a deposit in the ground which other grasses can then take over, you see, having eaten what has been eaten. And then that some other animals or insects or something of the sort can eat from the second stage of grasses and then other animals eat from those animals. And we get on up the line and when you eat a cow, you are running a very covert communication line. It’s a very indirect communication line in terms of eatingness. | ||
The guy has a certainty of nothing. “Let’s duplicate it and duplicate it and duplicate it and duplicate ...” We found something he was certain of. Let’s make lots of them. | Now, remember what I told you about the preclear being a big mass of telephone cable and so forth, that’s going in all directions and pervades all sorts of things and he is trying desperately to get from C to E. He is at C and he’s trying to make the body E and have one straight line. | ||
All right. Now, we’ll say to this preclear, “Now, give me three things that aren’t giving you orders.” | Now, if he has one straight line, all right. But instead of that, every command he puts into the bank enters this coil of communication wire at strange and mysterious places and restimulates all sorts of C’s and E’s and, pretty soon, he doesn’t know what the hell he’s doing-he gets to be normal after a while. And any command he gives himself shoots around the curves and jumps under and over and restimulates new C’s and new E’s and new overts and motivators and all the other mechanisms of facsimiles and so forth, as we know them, go into restimulation. | ||
And he says, “Oh, the lamp isn’t and the floor isn’t and the desk isn’t.” | Why do they go into restimulation? It’s because the individual is trying to get from his place, C, to E. He finally loses his place at C and after he’s lost his place at C, then anything can be cause. | ||
And you say, "All right. Now, get somebody else and get three things that this person...” | Now, practically any individual that sits down in your auditing chair has lost his place at C. You tell him to be three feet back of his head and you immediately give him the semblance of a straight communication line. He has located himself and now he knows where the body is and he can give direct orders to the body and you’ve simply bypassed all of his lines. | ||
Yeah? Is that What you say? No, that isn’t what you say at all. "Give me three things which aren’t giving you orders.” If you’re suspicious of your preclear, you say, “Give me one thing that isn’t giving you orders.” | Exteriorization-Interiorization, just by straightening out communication lines then does a great deal for the case. | ||
And he said, “Well, the lamp isn’t giving me orders.” | Now, where the individual, however, has done something else, where the individual has bogged himself into C’s and E’s, any thought he thinks gives him a super tangle of communication lines so that any thought he thinks seems to have significance. And therefore, he starts looking for causes. Well, he’s the only cause there can be in that bank, the rest is just a bunch of bypass lines. | ||
“All right. Are you sure the lamp isn’t giving you orders?” | So your individual sinks deeper and deeper into economics and the problems of eatingness and the worries of life and his responsibility to other life forms and gets further and further from his initial desire, which is to contact MEST. He’s now not contacting MEST, he’s contacting bodies, you see, and a body is covertly attached to MEST. It has a tremendous, continuous communication line. The body has got one that goes to some work area and then the work area restimulates a paycheck and the paycheck restimulates the grocery store and the grocery store restimulates the butcher shop and the butcher shop, the slaughter house and the slaughter house, the cattle ranch and the cattle ranch, the cattle and the cattle, the grass and the grass, the lichens and the moss and we finally get to MEST. Oh, what a lousy communication line. That’s terrible. All your thetan is trying to do is reach MEST. | ||
“Oh, well no, no more sure of it than anything else. It’s all a fog, it’s all a fog, it’s all a fog.” What are you doing as an auditor-sitting on your hands, looking out the window? Here’s a character that is ordered around, obviously, day and night by everything he sees, everything he perceives, everything he feels. If he looks at the wall, the wall is giving him orders. To do what? He doesn’t know. It’s just kind of giving him orders. | Well, if an individual simply could hang onto the back corners of a room long enough, he’d blow clear. Obviously, because you’re stretching a straight communication line to MEST, you’ve got two communication lines up there and he’s getting these two pieces of MEST, the two corners of the room. | ||
The whole universe is battering in on him at all corners, saying, “Do this. Do that. You’re supposed to be elsewhere, you’re not supposed to be here. You can’t go through me. Be here. Be there.” | Now, that tells you why this is a stretch, straight communication line, that’s all there’s to it. | ||
What a tremendous bombardment this individual must be experiencing and yet you don’t see in that single little thing there-you said, “Give me something that isn’t giving you orders.” And he says, “Oh, the lamp.” | When you have a preclear who is hard to exteriorize and who is not seeing and is not perceiving, when he has black clouds around him, white clouds, it doesn’t matter, he simply has an indirect communication line. That’s all. And his communication line is so indirect that he can’t find any C for him to be at, so he doesn’t know where he is. | ||
And you say, “Are you certain of that?” | Well, there’s another process than holding the back corners of the room which answers up to the same thing and that is, you just have the fellow, right where he is, kind of paw at any actual native-not remanufactured but actual native MEST. You know, just earth. You have him find a patch of earth and paw at it. Well, he’s in his head, you see or he’s someplace and we just have him reach out and paw at this earth and get interested in it. We don’t care whether he finds it in front of him or in back of him or the side of him. And when I say "paw at it,” I mean just that. You know, have him feel it and fool with it and feel it and paw at it and so forth and not think about anything else, just paw at it. It’s quite remarkable and very interesting what happens to a preclear when you do this. He immediately gets himself into a much better condition of rendition, communication and so forth. Well, you’ve put some distance there, you see. You’ve put some distance in his communication line and you’ve certainly strung one line. | ||
“Well, no more certain than anything else I’m ever certain of.” | If your object is to string one line, why, let’s string one line and just have him paw some MEST. Interesting process. | ||
“Well, find something else in the room that isn’t giving you orders.” | All kinds of other lines, of course, try to close in and open up and go out and pop and snap and all sorts of significances occur. A lot of havingness may blow off that he really feels is quite desirable, but the truth of the matter is the havingness he wants is not a mock-up of the havingness, it’s actual stuff, you know: gravel, sand, no more than that. | ||
“Oh, yeah ... Oh, the desk isn’t.” | Now, somebody came up to me rather starry-eyed right after the Congress and said a lot of people are getting well by going into a radium mine up here someplace-a uranium mine and so on. If they knew about this process, they would know very well why people would get well. The second they attribute it to some kind of a radiation from the radium, they’re off the beam. | ||
You say, “Well, now are you certain the desk isn’t giving you orders?” | If they were to take an individual who was in foul condition and, unbeknownst to this individual, simply hang up bags of radium around his room, you know, back of the walls and that sort of thing, this individual never would get well. Hadn’t anything to do with radiation beyond this: that that’s awful dense stuff. | ||
“Well no, no more certain than I am of anything else.” Boy, you better get in there and pitch. You better find something he can be certain of-darn soon. | Now, however, the individual taking himself up to a uranium mine, knows it’s a uranium mine, wants to contact the uranium, goes into a cave where he is entirely surrounded by matter, much of which is quite dense, and he knows this and slurp-slurp-slurp. Now, how much more effective this would be if the individual went into the cave. You see, if you just had a bag of radium, it just wouldn’t work anywhere near as well as putting the fellow in the cave. | ||
Now, by the way, there’s always something he can be certain isn’t giving him orders and that’s the nothingness of something. I’ve run a preclear for two hours of solid relief-of just gasps and relief and sighs and coming up all the time like he had a Caterpillar tractor dragging him straight up the slope-surge meter on the Tone Scale going up, up, up. On what? | Now, we have him be in the middle of this cave and let’s have him paw uranium. You know, reach out and pet it. That’s all. And you would find people getting well at a fantastic rate of speed. Not because of radiation. | ||
Just having him-“All right. Now well, if the desk isn’t giving you orders, what could you get about the desk that isn’t giving you orders?” | Now, every once in a while, you’ll find an individual all hung up at some period when he was bombarded with X-rays. It’s quite common to find an individual stuck on the time track during an X-ray picture taking process. You know, somebody takes an X-ray of him and we find him hung up on the track. Almost anybody who has had a lot of X-rays taken of them will flip on an E-Meter if you say, "Don’t breathe, don’t move.” That’s what they say to them on an X-ray, "Don’t breathe, don’t move.” | ||
“Well, nothing.” | Then they say, "All right.” The thing goes whir-click and they say, "All right.” | ||
“Well, tell me, if there was a nothingness of this desk sitting alongside of it-you know, another-a nothingness of it sitting alongside, would that be giving you orders?” | That’s nice stuff, you know, X-rays, slurp-slurp. And a darned small dose of it, however, a tiny little amount of it, so it’s awfully scarce, you see. | ||
And the fellow says, “No! It wouldn’t be.” | Another thing, an individual can be found glued in front of many television tubes if he’s a television fan. Because there’s heavy X-rays come through those television tubes, there’s heavy matter actually in those rays, comes through those screens. Anybody sitting in front of a television screen is under a continuous bombardment of heavy particles, radioactive particles. | ||
And then we just keep that up. We get a nothingness of the lamp not giving him orders and a nothingness of windows not giving him orders and a nothingness of floors not giving him orders and a. nothingness of his mother not giving him orders and a nothingness of that not giving him orders. And we just go on and on and on and on and on. | Yeah, the television industry doesn’t let this out very carefully. They have never solved the problem of shielding. | ||
And the first thing you know, the guy says, “You know, you know I... there... there’s a thumbtack over on the wall there and, you know, it isn’t giving me orders.” | Over at Philco, one day, a fellow was asked, just on the supposition that there were heavy particles-he was in the television tube design department and he was asked very forthrightly, "Now, what are you going to do about the heavy particles that are bombarding the audiences in front of these screens?” “Well, we’re doing all we can. We’ve tried some leaded screens, but that doesn’t work. But one of these days, why, we’ll come up with something that does work and stop it.” He took his finger off his number, didn’t he? | ||
And you finally entered him into MEST. Run it for a couple of hours on a preclear and then finally gotten him up to that point. | You put a Geiger counter in front of a TV tube and it will go tickity-tick, tickity-tick, tickity-tick, tickity-tick. It’s very interesting. | ||
Well, where you don’t enter a case anywhere-you just kind of pitch in, you know, and run scales or something-you’re not playing any concert. You got to pitch in there someplace. You got to enter a case somewhere. A case isn’t entered until you’ve entered it. Where do you enter it? You enter it to the highest level of certainty the preclear can attain and you open it on the highest level of certainty. The second he finds something of which he’s absolutely certain, his case is open. | Female voice: Is that harmful? | ||
I don’t care if it’s just an absolute certainty-he’s just completely certain, a big surge of certainty that “force does no good.” That’s one you run into occasionally. More often, you run into “Words and talking to people and arguing with them does absolutely no good at all. You have to have a rifle or a shotgun or an ax before you could make any impression on them.” And the guy is real certain of it. | Harmful! It will kill you! The body can’t take it. | ||
Well, what is this certainty? Well, listen, it’s a sort of an emotion, if you want to call it that, but it doesn’t have particles in it. It’s a hard thing to describe because we’re not running a dichotomy of anything. But it is a matter of a relief. It’s a feeling of “Boy, there’s one thing that we can just nail on the time track and skip. We’re sure of that. We cleared up that problem.” | Television is riding a very, very, very dangerous little point right there because if the public at large were to connect the bombardment of television with the deadliness of the atom bomb rays, they would not let their kids sit in front of it. | ||
Well, what’s the symptom? This means that an enormous number of communication lines, like balled-up telephone wires thrown in the middle of the table here-that a whole communication problem (you know, a whole communication network which applies to one problem)-has cleared. And you just start doing amputations of these circuits. | Actually, it hangs anybody up on the track. It’s the most wonderful advertising mechanism in the world because it sticks the preclear in every ad and that’s about the way it works. | ||
Here is this tremendous bundle of wire lying here. What’s the preclear been doing? He’s been going into one end of it and he tries to come out the other end of it and he’s going across the top of it and he hits other C’s and other E’s. And he’s going up and down and back and forth and around and round through this wire. | You run somebody who customarily watches television, you’ll find him stuck in front of TV screens. | ||
That’s the bullpen manifestation I used to talk to you about years ago. Bullpen. You know, you park the datum in the bullpen. The thing didn’t clear anything, you know? You ran into this a lot of times with a joke with somebody. And very often an auditor is quite startled to have a preclear suddenly say, “Gosh, ah-ha, yeah. Yeah.” | Now, there’s another reason for this. Movie screens stick people, too, but not because of particles. It’s because the movie screen keeps telling them to go elsewhere and be elsewhere and they have to keep holding themself in the chair and hold themselves in their head to keep on looking at the screen to go elsewhere. | ||
“What’s the matter?” | So an individual who has watched an enormous amount of entertainment, has gotten to the point of where when you say “Go elsewhere,” like a picture says to him “Go elsewhere,” he just fixes himself a little tighter in his head. | ||
It’s not in reply to anything the auditor was doing. If he inquired a little closely, he’d find out that the preclear had just cleared a joke. He had decided it was funny or wasn’t funny or related to something or something. He’s decided on this joke. And it seemed to him like all the years of his life-ever since he was four and he was told this joke by his mother, as a joke—he’s been pondering that joke. And it looks to him for a moment as though it’s been foremost in his mind ever since he was four. | Entertainment, the fictional part of this universe-the more important thing about the motion pictures though is that it does not deliver to the individual any mass. It’s totally light particles and there’s no mass involved in the presentation. | ||
That’s because he’s taken a straight look at one of these circuits, you see. He’s found out where the joke fitted or didn’t fit and he’s been able to reject, throw it away, vanquish it, swallow it, eat it up, do something with it besides let it wander around through a whole bunch of communication lines. | And if we look over live entertainment audiences-if we could examine a live entertainment audience and a motion-picture entertainment audience-the live stage audience not having seen pictures, you see, and the picture audience not having seen stage, we could select out two groups of this character and possibly we could around New York. I know people in New York who have never been to the movies for fifteen years; they wouldn’t go near them. We’d find that there’s probably a considerable difference in their attitude toward entertainment and we would probably find that there was a considerable difference in their exteriorization potential. Probably find the people who had watched live stage were much easier to exteriorize than those who had constantly watched movies; this is a problem of mass. The live stage does give you some mass. The actors have mass at least. See, it’s not a problem then of-a very strange problem, it’s just a problem of mass again. | ||
People have more jokes wandering around through communication lines. They have more darned things going on that are in the bullpen-that is to say, awaiting solution. These big electronic brains have things called “bullpens.” And every time the electronic brain can’t solve anything or it thinks it’s going to have to wait and use this data later, it’ll park it over in the bullpen. | Now, another thing that the live stage gives you is some space, you have depth in space. | ||
And as the machine begins to work poorly, if you look into the bullpens, you find out they’re getting awfully full. Similar to any thinking machine, the more data it has there that it might relate to something, but doesn’t know whether it should or not (you know, “Does this datum relate?”), why, the harder it is for the fellow to think. Because his circuits are occupied with all sorts of data on which he’s keeping attention until such time as he may need it. | Now, one of the strangest things that you’re going to have to process one of these days is going to be 3-D. Because there is depth with no mass and that’s impossible. And audiences don’t like 3-D. I don’t care what they put on in 3-D. Any popular picture of yesterday, had it been put on with 3-D would have been less popular. | ||
What’s certainty? Certainty starts in on a case as this manifestation of clearing a line. You’ll clear up just bundle after bundle of these communication cables. You just throw them away. Why? Because he hasn’t got anything wandering in them anymore. | You take this little picture Kiss Me Kate. It happens to have been run and printed so as to be shown on a flat screen as well as a 3-D screen. And the Kiss Me Kate is massing as much or a little more, box office, as a perfectly flat picture than as 3-D. People want to go see Kiss Me Kate and they’ll even see it if it’s 3-D. But other pictures which are not quite up to that par, people are going around swearing at right now; they’re having an awful time with these pictures. And yet really there’s nothing wrong with 3-D, it’s no great strain on the eyes or anything of the sort. It’s just the fact that it’s this damn delusion: they apparently have mass there and there’s no mass there. They want mass and they don’t see the mass and so the picture dissatisfies them. | ||
And so you begin to string tighter and tighter, shorter and shorter communication lines in terms of cause to effect. And finally you just get a definite cause to effect and what have you got then? You’ve got the thetan exteriorized, running the body. | This stuff becomes very elementary when you apply Scientology to the business of livingness. You could tell immediately that your best method of advertising, of course, would be TV; it would not be radio, because people don’t have good sonic recall. | ||
So if we got a gradient scale of certainty and just kept doing that, the next thing you know, why, all of the fellow’s bullpens would be cleaner than a whistle. In other words, he wouldn’t be hanging up on all these “maybes”: Does the data relate or doesn’t it relate? | Furthermore, i£ you wanted to build up a long-term program, you would catch the kids and you would just keep them coming through, you’d lay in basic-basic on them. | ||
Now, when you say, “Get a nothingness of this desk. Now, is it giving you orders?” And the fellow can say for sure, “No,” he’s found something. | If you wanted to start organizing a country right now on a slave state basis, you would organize it via TV. Most wonderful thing there-the way George Orwell, in his 1984, paralleled and probably took from early electronic societies and these, of course, specialize in such things as TV which can be heavy-wave bombardment. | ||
Well, in the machinery there’s a tremendous amount of orders parked. He must obey all these orders. He must obey all these people. The whole universe and every form of life in it is apparently giving him some kind of orders. And he’s all of a sudden found a nothingness of something that isn’t giving him orders and it mechanically will clear out old desks across which an enormous amount of stuff has poured. It mechanically clears out all those data banks-boom, boom, boom, boom. | All right. So much for that. Your preclear, then, is trying to weave a straight communication line and has lots of illusions and things and stuff around him which are preventing him from doing this. | ||
How does it do that? Well, the desk is gone. And if the desk is gone, then a nothingness of a desk must remain. And the nothingness of the desk can't give him any orders anymore, so of course that clears all of the stuff that was on the desk giving him orders. See, nothingness of the desk can’t give him orders, so there’s no desk there then. | And one of the main things that prevent him from doing it, of course, is his slavery to an economic system. He keeps fighting this system. And the whole theory is that he can have some money if he invests some effort and if he has the money, he can then have some MEST. I wish you’d show me the police force that is making it necessary for him to have money in order to have MEST. | ||
It cross ... On Boolean algebra-“yes greater than no,” “no greater than yes”-that’s Boolean algebra. That’s how these thinking machines work. They simply work and go into function by unbalancing the “maybes” toward “yes” or “no.” You got a “maybe” there, so you just keep feeding in data until the “yes” becomes greater than the “no” or the “no” becomes greater than the “yes”; so it is true or it isn’t true. And out goes large chunks and segments of lines. | Now, there is-if he wants manufactured or reprocessed MEST, yes, yes, the economic system does step in there as a necessity, in other words, heavy MEST. But we look at the happy gayness of a child and we find out that the child doesn’t give a damn for the form, so this too must have an artificiality about it. | ||
Now, what are you doing to a preclear that you keep auditing on uncertain things? Oh brother. You just keep filling up his bullpens, of course. Hour goes by and he’s got some more data for the bullpen. “Well, was I really giving myself something or wasn’t I giving myself something?” Another hour goes by, he’s got another binful. And another hour goes by, he’s got another binful. And your case is getting tougher and tougher to work, if the truth be known. | Therefore, the thirst of the preclear or the thetan is for MEST and he is buying it at heavy cost. He is buying it at such a cost that he doesn’t obtain it, because each one of these economic systems depends that he become more and more dependent for his acquisition of MEST upon the system itself. And a new dependency is introduced which introduces, much more important to us, brand-new artificial C’s to E’s in his bank. You know, more communication lines of more kinds and more and more kinds and more and more kinds and more and more kinds. | ||
You keep working on uncertainties. Because uncertainty itself is not a commodity and never will be and never has been. Uncertainty is the result of, or the condition resulting from, two certainties counteropposed. You don’t have, in an uncertainty, an item or a commodity. You have two communication lines fronting each other in such a way as to impose a block on each other’s flows and there it sits. Now there are two lines and no flow. Now, the individual is going to try to make those things flow because it’s apparently some sort of a barrier. | A writer, a painter and so forth who is trying to gain his daily bread by this, has entered his artistic creativeness into the field of economics and, as such, is liable to suffer considerably in terms of his happiness and cheerfulness. It’s almost impossible to maintain any continuous, arduous contact with the economic world and at the same time retain one’s creative ability in terms of form. Because the economic system continually presents the individual with already created forms. | ||
You ask somebody to put uncertainty in the walls, he might do it. And he might. Won’t do him any good, though. You’ve got to put certainty that there is something and certainty that there is nothing in the walls in order to put uncertainty into the walls. See that? | So we have our form as a secondary consideration and the actual fact of MEST particles themselves being a primary consideration to the individual. | ||
Now, if you don’t learn this lesson about certainty in auditing a preclear, then you haven’t learned what livingness is composed of. Livingness operates best when an individual knows what he’s doing. He can’t know what he’s doing if he is mainly involved in combating past uncertainties, particularly to the extent where he can’t look at present time. | Therefore, the Remedy of Havingness is a very necessary step in the recovery of an individual. But primarily because we say communication is more important than affinity, it is more important than a reality and we say that the plainest form of communication has the common denominator of space in it and has Cause to Effect as its motive. We can get this kind of a situation with the individual; we can get a thetan-a thetan contacting MEST. This of course to some degree makes him an effect. You understand that we’re putting him-when we string this straight line, making him paw some matter, we’re putting the C in the matter and the E at the thetan. | ||
Livingness would be a horrible mess if all you did was go over whether you were right yesterday or wrong yesterday when you did so-and-so or didn’t do so-and-so. If you’re in this kind of a condition: somebody leaves your presence, you’ve been talking to him, this person walks away finally and you say, “Well, did I act foolishly or didn’t I act foolishly? Or did I say the right thing or didn’t I say the right thing?” and yakety-bow-row-row, back and forth, knock, knock. Well, it’s a hangover of the conversation. | Now, in order to get this situation reversed, the thetan tries to change or alter the matter and so we actually have a | versation between the thetan and the matter. That’s what’s going on. | |
---|---|---|---|
When a conversation is done, it’s done. If you didn’t do it right and if your presence wasn’t acceptable at the time, the time to worry about it is at the time. You’re not going to rehash or change the conversation by thinking about it afterwards. | Now, to make a conversation out of it: the thetan feels the matter, that makes him cause of the contact, but then the matter creates an effect upon him, therefore he must put out some imagination toward the matter to keep a two-way system-communication system going with matter. But imagination toward the matter is necessary. | ||
You might be able to say, “Well, I made him mad. I’ll go around to see him tomorrow and make it all right.” If you’re in a good frame of mind-that is to say, if you can get your certainties up, if your computations run out straight and so forth, it would be enough for you to say, “Well, I made him mad. I’ll have to go around tomorrow and straighten it out,” to clear the circuits. | That’s a big mystery this stuff called matter, who put it there and so forth, we realize this is a big mystery, but it’s not a particularly important mystery, because it’s there. Now, it is there. But as he drifts away from it, economically via eatingness, so forth-as he drifts away from it, it becomes less and less real, becomes more and more illusory. | ||
If you could see these thinking machines which you use-they’re thinking machines. You made them. See, they work, just like thinking machines. If you could see them in operation, you would see them getting “yeses greater than noes,” “noes greater than yeses,” “yeses greater than noes,” “noes greater than yeses.” And then every once in a while, “yes/no.” And you’d see the machine stop, see? “No” is not greater than “yes,” “yes” is not greater than “no.” | Now, just on the other side, there it is and before it deteriorates in terms of more communication systems to obtain it, there is another creative contact of the material to which the thetan is a partner. In other words, he has to create it and then he can feel it. | ||
The problem of thinkingness is a dynamic problem. It has to do with impulses or particles. | Well, to get him up to the point of where the creation was or where the creation takes place, why, you better put him in good contact with it. | ||
It’s a problem wherein two communication lines so flow as to flow or so blunt each other as to not flow. You’ve got stuck data all over the track, in terms of thinkingness, where communication lines are interposed. | So you remedy his havingness, you remedy his communication. But when you’re remedying his havingness, remember you should remedy his communication. And communication has to have space in it and an individual to be free has to have space. Restriction is the stuff of which slaves are made. So restriction and lack of space are right next door to each other. Well, it’s the same thing. | ||
Your father told you you could go to the show, your mother told you you couldn’t go to the show and neither Father nor Mother has the last word in the family. The kid is sort of halfway out the front door, but he’s in the living room, but he should be in the bedroom, or ought he go play? And you’ll see all of these other computations adding in: should he go play or should he go press it harder? Or maybe if he went and asked Aunt Agnes, maybe she’d say he could go or say she’d take him-his parents never objected then and so forth. And he should go, but if he does go, will he get punished when he gets home? | Restriction and failure of communication are the same thing. | ||
What’s all this extra data? Where is it coming from? Well, it’s coming from what you might call a shotgun of energy which is unable to pass down its normal lines of action. It’s blocked action. So you’re dealing with a barrier. And every time the flow of thoughts hits one of these superbalanced yes equals noes, or nearly so, it just shotguns out around it and starts flowing down lines all over the place. | Okay. Now, just for a little demonstration of this, let’s just try this. Let’s just try this. Now, close your eyes. And you will find somewhere outside the window or the yard or the street or something of the sort, you’ll find some raw matter. I’m not talking about a pavement now or grass. We want some sand or gravel. | ||
Now, to give you sort of an idea of what this is, let’s take the case of the fellow that- one day I started processing a preclear that I had supposed to be in fairly good shape. And I was processing him for a very, very short space of time when I suddenly realized that this guy was in terror, which he was barely controlling. I processed him for maybe a minute to realize this. | Down underneath the floor, there’s a lot of unprocessed sand or gravel. So let’s just directly contact this sand or gravel and paw it wherever you find it. | ||
And I asked him what was wrong and he thought, well, his business was going to fail and he possibly thought his wife was going to leave him and he possibly thought that this was going to take place and that was going to take place. And away we go, see, round and around and around and around. | Just pet it. And just continue to do so now. | ||
And I say, “Well, that’s all very good.” He’d just given me so much data, you see, that if you’d started to process the engrams individually which underlay each one of these, you would have been swamped, but promptly. It would have been a couple hundred hours’ work at least. | Examine it and pet it. | ||
So I said, “What’s going to happen to you tomorrow?” | Now, let’s just pet it now. | ||
“Well, it isn’t tomorrow. It’s Thursday.” | Direct contact, let’s just pet it. Touch it. | ||
“What’s going to happen to you Thursday?” | Let’s see if we can’t feel it to a little depth. | ||
“I’m going to have out two molars.” | Now lets feel a little bigger area of it and get the particles more particularly and a little greater depth of it. | ||
“Well, do you want to go to the dentist?” | And see if we can’t quite get the flavor of it, the constituency and the flavor of it. Okay. Okay now. Okay. End of that. | ||
“Well, I don’t know. I can still cancel the appointment, but I really ought to go.” | What happened? | ||
What did you hit? You hit a big pain barrier there, you see? The pain is inhibiting his going to the dentist and he’s trying not to go to the dentist, but he knows he’s got to go to the dentist. And you’ve got two immediate problems superimposed: The problem of how do I keep the body from receiving pain and the problem of how do I get the body into some kind of shape so it won’t have excess pain. See, two communications, two impulses, two intentions directly opposed. | Female voice: I didn t like the earth here and went back to California and took on the mountains up there-Sierra Nevada. It was richer and... | ||
So what was happening? All the individual’s energy was bypassing this problem. It was hitting this problem and spraying, you might say, through the entire bank and was energizing all the bad news there was. And that’s what we can call a block. We can call that a mental block. Nineteenth-century psychology tried to and they didn’t know what was blocking, but they kept talking about mental blocks. A person couldn’t think about something and they figured this was a block. Okay. That’s too elementary to be of any use. | Yeah. Yeah. | ||
What’s happening is, is the individual has two dynamic impulses, two impulses which are counteropposed in such a way as to cause a stoppage or barrier against further thought on the problem. | Female voice:... more solid, more dense, more pure. | ||
“Joke. Is it funny or isn’t it funny? That’s good enough. I mean, am I supposed to laugh?” | Mm-hm. | ||
Now, the fellow who is deeply involved in significance will tell you, “Well, it might be true, you see. I mean, the fellow, when he walks into the restaurant, you see, he might really have sat down and said-when the waiter brought the bowl of milk for the dog and the waiter said to him, ‘We don’t have any apple pie. Will peach pie do?’ Well, I don’t know. In Boston, it might be a brothel. They might call a brothel a peach pie or something. I, of course, don’t know the other data that would go to this and I don’t know whether that joke is funny or ...” | Second female voice: I was in my backyard close to the Sierra Madre. | ||
What’s he doing there? It’s whether he should laugh or not laugh and there will be some kind of a block way back on the bank where he laughed and he ran into a barrier promptly. He made fun of Papa when Papa fell downstairs or something of the sort and ever since that time he doesn’t know whether to laugh or not. So every time he hears a joke, why, it says in the bank “joke” and the pinball machines start lighting up, you see. And all of a sudden-and then this one, see? Bullpen. Doesn’t go anyplace. | Thirdfemale voice: I justfound that the grains varied a lot. They were smoother, they were bigger, like gravel. But as you got very small, they became terrifically hard and very, very sharp, just like glass. And some were almost like glass, yellow glass, with a kind of grain. And they seemed to be so compact, you know. And they were various colors-there was yellow and black amongst the white stuff. | ||
What’s happening? Well, the energy does go someplace. It shunts on down the lines and starts going into deeper significances. A half an hour after he’s been told a joke that he couldn’t laugh at and he doesn’t know whether it was funny or not or had a point or not, he’s just hung up. On what? On jokes? | Mm-hm. | ||
No, you’ll find him out here trying to start his car and not knowing whether he should start his car at that moment and go home or whether he should simply wait there for a little while on the off chance that his wife has been shopping. You’ll find him on some big maybe-no action, see. And he’ll drive down the road. | Thirdfemale voice: I was more interested in the sand than I was in the pebbles. | ||
And how does an accident happen? Normally, accidents happen because a fellow sits too long to see what’s going to happen. He’s inactive when he should be acting. | A lot of locks fly through as you did this? | ||
Now, here you’re just hitting at one block, it shotguns through the bank and starts jamming everything. A preclear who’s in bad shape is not necessarily hitting a present time problem but very well might be, of some magnitude. And unless you unbalance it as a-I told you earlier, remember? Present time problem on a preclear. Unless you ask the preclear whether or not he has a present time problem, why, he’s not liable to tell you, because he doesn’t think he has. You know, he’s just shotgunning all over the place. He doesn’t really recognize his present time problem anymore. | Audience: Mm-hm. | ||
What is his present time problem? Well, you could, with great ease for five minutes or so, simply ask him what’s his present time worry? What’s he worrying about? What’s got him stopped one way or the other? And he’ll answer right up. Something has. | Female voice: Made me ravenous though. | ||
Funny part of it is that it might sort of just fall apart. It’s had him stopped for so long that something must have him stopped in present time, you see? He’s hit some big ones. But the funny part of it is, these really don’t catalyze violently unless there actually is some kind of a present time upset in his existence, which is balanced so that the “no” equals the “yes.” | Male voice: Very hungry, Ron. | ||
Do a little Mock-up Processing, run a concept, run Certainty Processing in its most elementary form-“I have to go to the dentist. I do not have to go to the dentist”-and you will upset the “maybe.” | Second female voice: Oh, I liked it, though. | ||
Just say, “Now, sit there a moment and get the idea now that you have to go to the dentist.” | Yeah, hunger. | ||
“All right.” “Now get the idea, ‘I do not have to go to the dentist.’ ” | Thirdfemale voice: I liked the feeling. It was a-it was a comforting feeling. I got something. | ||
Now, that’s one way of handling it. Might take a little while to do that. It’s a very elementary way of handling it. I mean, it’s terribly crude. | Female voice: Sand was too flimsy to be satisfying. | ||
All right. You find out that the preclear is in violent trouble with his wife. Let’s take this Unit. He’s in the class and his wife doesn’t want him to be in the class. And every time the auditor audits him, why, energy starts going around in the lines and so forth. And the person doesn’t quite know what’s wrong, you see, but we’ve got “I should be in the class, I shouldn’t be in the class,” see? “I need my wife, I don’t need my wife.” “I want to stay married, I don’t want to stay married.” Anything like that is liable to just take the problem and go bzzztt and break the communication block. | That’s right, that’s right. Now, you get up there and get around some of these super dense stars. There are a lot of stars up there that are so dense they can’t radiate. | ||
Why do you break a communication block? Because it locks up one of these thinking machines so that any energy thrown at the thinking machine then starts passing through all significances. | There’s something vastly wrong with the periodic chart because it just doesn’t allow for enough different kinds of electrons and enough variances and variabilities. And it certainly doesn’t even vaguely allow for enough mass and density. It stops way short. | ||
What’s significance, anyway? Significance comes about because somebody was afraid once. After that he has to know everything before he goes. He has to know before he goes and so forth, because something bad might happen to him. | For instance, the companion star of Sirius: one spoonful of it on Earth would weigh one ton. Well, what kind of matter would that be? I brought this up one time to a physicist, a nuclear physicist, friend of mine, and I said, “Well now, that’s a very interesting thing. And what kind of matter do you suppose that is? How many electrons per” and so forth. | ||
This is elementary auditing. It is also, by the way-it’s also, by the way, very good auditing. You handle the preclear. You say, “Now, look. This guy, obviously-he can’t be three feet back of his head. There’s something on a cause-effect problem here. There must be a lockup on the track.” All right. Let’s take out the first uncertainty that we can get our hands on. Let’s just amputate it from the bank, boom! Let’s use Concept Processing, nothing more horrible than that. Guy can’t get mock-ups. All right, just use Concept Processing. We’ll unlock a problem, one problem. | And he said “Oh, well, you can’t consider it in that light.” | ||
The fellow has said, “Well, I don’t know this. I don’t know that.” Maybe some problem-“I don’t know whether I can have a baby. I don’t know whether I am sexually potent.” “I don’t know whether I will be able to afford eating,” you know? Might be some problem like this. It’s got the bank locked up. Some elementary problem, you know, an elementary problem-by an elementary problem, I don’t mean a simple problem, I mean a problem dealing with basics. A problem with basics would be on communication or it would be on the dynamics-very definitely on the dynamics. It would have to do with survival and creation, destruction. | And I said “What?” Well, I said, “Don’t you count the electrons that go around and around the protons” and so forth? | ||
You just unlock it as a problem and you just start tearing the preclear to pieces. But you better not use Concept Running very long because you just start gunshotting the bank. It’s a very limited technique, but you’ve unlocked a problem. | “Well, yes, but after stuff gets up to the density of plutonium and so forth, it becomes above the level of tolerance and, of course, explodes.” | ||
Now the fellow says, “Well, the truth of the matter is...” Now that you’ve handled this problem, he’s going to give you another one because you’ve just got through giving life to problems. You get what a little trip there was in the track there, see? You’ve now validated his problems, so you’ve got the bank alive. Everywhere it says “problem,” there’s a pinball light has gone on, bong! | And I said “Well, now how do you account for the fact that that star up there, that binary, small companion there, weighs about that? It’s accounted for in that fashion?” | ||
All right. He says, “I’ve never been the same emotionally so far as the opposite sex is concerned”-now that you’ve unlocked this problem of, in present time here, “I’ve just never been the same since Gertie left me.” | “Well, I don’t know that the astronomers are right about that thing.” | ||
“When was that?” | And I said “Well, let’s take the size of Sirius and take the speed with which that little star goes around it and we find to be that close in, boy, this thing would have to be awfully dense and we calculate it out and it’s very obvious that it is that dense.” | ||
“Well, she was my eighth wife and that was about twenty years ago” or something on this order. | “Well, um-that’s according to astronomy and we wouldn’t know about that.” Yeah. He wouldn’t know all right. | ||
By the way, an auditor never fails to be surprised when he runs into a tough case-he’s U always surprised that there’s so much action in the person’s life. A tremendous amount of action has gone on in the person’s life. There are very unusual situations in this person’s life. And he never bothers to ask for them, I guess because he considers the person is-you know, he just—I don’t know, I guess he figures out the fellow got that way by sneezing. | The immediate conclusion that plutonium explodes just because of its density shouldn’t lead to the immediate conclusion that everything which is that dense explodes. And that’s an unreasonable assumption by the way. | ||
You suppose that? He sneezed five times once in a Safeway store and he’s been aberrated ever since? No, no. No, you just don’t write the plot of life well if you think that. This person has run head-on into tractors, dynamite, automobile accidents, miscarriages, eight illegal marriages, sixteen store robberies. Oh my God, no telling what the hell you’ll run into in a person. | You can say, “Everything that is dense as a fire cracker explodes.” That’s not a reasonable assumption either. Because cigarette lighters are more dense than fire crackers and cigarette lighters don’t explode very often. | ||
But if a person doesn’t respond immediately to auditing, they’ve got a past, believe me, right away. You say, “Be three feet back of your head”-doesn’t mean that if people can be easily three feet back of their head, don’t have a past either, but it does mean that the past is pretty boggy on the individual that doesn’t. All right. | And in such a way, there’s very little known, actually, in the textbooks concerning the constituency of matter. | ||
You say to this individual, “Be three feet back of your head.” The individual is three feet back of the head. You go on and you audit according to rote. You have him be in this planet and then exteriorize and interiorize out of Jupiter a few times and you go on and it’s all running very smoothly and Change of Space and so forth. | But anyway, did you get a little jump on this, a little build up? Yes, Lee. | ||
Boy, you just haven’t taken a microscope to this preclear and looked at the kind of lock that is flying off of that preclear. But you can get rid of these things with that preclear and you’re processing a hell of a lot of significance and it’s going by the boards in all directions while you run this process. | Female voice: I used “hunger” yesterday to start an avalanche. I wondered... | ||
Now, the next fellow, you say, “Be three feet back of your head.” | Mm-hm. | ||
And he says, “What head? You three feet back of your head?” Or “Head. Let’s see. Head, head, head. Now, the naval use of the word head ...” | Female voice:... and it just flowed out... | ||
Let’s not suspect that the fellow is simply stupid or something of the sort or something strange or that he’s a peculiar breed of cat. No, I’m afraid he’s just had a little bit more than his share of livingness and he’s taken it hard. | That’s all right. That’s all right. If a preclear could turn that on, it would-it would start an avalanche-hunger. | ||
Well, let’s investigate, then, in terms of certainty. And we find out that if we investigate in terms of certainty, he’s riding a “maybe” that’s bigger than the biggest nightmare black horse you ever saw. There’d be some big “maybe” sitting there. Oh, I don’t mean that you have to probe deeply. You don’t even need an E-Meter to find that out. | Well, that’s basically what “hunger” is, is a hunger for MEST. It isn’t a hunger for rats or a hunger for ice-cream sodas or something of the sort; here you have these strange and peculiar flavors. | ||
You ask the fellow, “Now, what are you most worried about in life?” | Now, it’s odd that the body has such a variation in hunger, but you shouldn’t take something as aberrated, with as many cockeyed communication lines as a body, as your criteria in what is satisfying or not satisfying in MEST. The body has many prohibitions and so forth. | ||
And the fellow says, “Oh, I don’t know. Um-um-um-shoes. I’m worried about my shoes. I’m ...” He’s-just nonsense, you see. | Take ascorbic acid: it must be so many atoms and molecules of various kind and hydrocarbons and, etc., strung together in so many directions: And we get this together and the body finds its hunger is satisfied in the teeth area and so on by ascorbic acid. Well, that’s interesting, but the thetan doesn’t have any such anatomy to support and the thetan doesn’t have a delicate stomach. There’s no reason why he should be supposed to have a delicate stomach. But because he’s in association with the body, he becomes very, very choosy indeed about what kind of MEST he can have. As a consequence, he will borrow the aberration that he can’t have hard MEST, which is directly opposed to what he wants. He wants hard MEST. | ||
“No, no. Something more important than shoes. What do you think might happen tomorrow?” | Now, this little automaticity there that I was showing you yesterday, concerning-you’d look around and knock every dense mass you can see into a softness and a glueyness or a softness of some sort-knock them soft. That is the automatic machine of the stomach that is at work there, it has to soften everything up, the saliva glands-they have to soften everything up. | ||
And the fellow sits there for a moment and he looks at you. He says, “Tomorrow? Hmm. [sigh] God knows. Tomorrow. I don’t know. Why? Is something bad going to happen tomorrow?” | The goal of the stomach and the goal of the body is to soften it all up and yet a body is very happy about armor plate, you know, to protect it and yet it has to soften everything up. | ||
You just found out your individual probably didn’t have the next thirty seconds of time track. He had no security on the next minute or so of time track. It just isn’t there yet, see? It’s just sort of happening as he goes along. | Now, a body goal to soften everything up, of course, will cause the thetan to start softening everything up and that isn’t what the thetan wants. Quite remarkable. A fellow told me one time, “I don’t know why I have been doing this, but for the last week or so, I have been chewing on a heavy piece of energy mass that was up in front of my face and I’ve been chewing on this and chewing on it and chewing on it. And I finally got it all softened up, and I just got it softened up, when I suddenly realized that way early on the track, I had looked for a long, long time to find a piece of matter that heavy.” In other words, he had been saving this for years and years and years and years and years and then, one day, he all of a sudden up and chews it up. Well, that’s just because he’s borrowed this aberration of “got to soften everything up” by the body. | ||
He might even be stopping time, second by second by second by second. Everything might be a time stop. That’s the funniest situation to be in. It’s not necessarily a psychotic situation. A psychotic situation is a reach and withdraw situation, must reach-can’t reach, or must withdraw-can’t withdraw, in high restimulation. That’s psycho. | Well, now what conclusions can we reach here with regard to this, you might say, “pawing processing?” Well, it’s that an individual is at least contacting the product of his automaticity. I mean we could at least tentatively assign that if the MEST universe is his automaticity. But whichever way-and we might assign his hunger to the fact he’s been hit so often by matter that it has developed an artificial hunger in him for it. And we could theorize on it in various ways, but does it make a preclear better? Well, yes, it does, but after you’ve done just so much of that and so forth, you better go back to fulfilling his havingness in terms of an automatic avalanche. In other words, this doesn’t bypass having to resolve his havingness in terms of large dense masses. It should be very clear to you. | ||
The other of “stop time, stop time, stop time”-is just sort of a lethargic “I don’t dare go anyplace or get out of anything. And the MEST universe isn’t going to be here in the next couple of seconds, anyway. I know that. I don’t know anything else, but that one I know.” | It’s an awfully good way to bring an individual up the line, though. | ||
This kind of a situation is compounded by some immediate problem. And he says, “Well, the truth of the matter is I have to write a letter to my mother. And every time I write a letter to my mother and tell her what I’m doing, I get a nasty reply. But if I don’t write her a letter, I’m not going to have the twenty-five bucks I need next week.” Well, that is certainly a communication lockup. You see, the uncertainty situation is always a communication lockup. “I don’t know whether I ought to tell them or not.” It’s a communication lockup. | All right. Just as a very fast review of what process you're doing this week. You’re taking an individual in or out, you’re working around on acceptance level to find out something he can have. And by gradient scales or the dynamics or some other fashion, any fashion you can, build it up to the point where he can have very dense masses and you get these masses to-eventually to avalanche on him and then get him to supplement the avalanche with other masses he’s throwing into it. And then finally we have him take over and turn on an avalanche of his own, on himself, of dense masses. All right. | ||
“Let’s see. If I tell them, they won’t ever speak to me again. I know that. But I’ve got to tell them because every time I’m talking to them, I kind of feel it coming up in my throat. You know, I’m liable to say it at any moment. You know, I-I’ve-I-I’ve tried for years to keep it a secret, but I chew tobacco.” You know, communication lockup. Now, that’s another type. There’s various kinds of communication lockups. | This is assisted by applying courage particles and enjoyment particles. And somebody comes up this morning with the suggestion that a hunger particle might be quite effective in this and so it might. But a little bit of courage and then a little bit of enjoyment, and a little bit of courage and a little bit of enjoyment, produces a very weird catalyst on any such flow. Because those are the two entrance points-particularly courage. Courage is the entrance point to resistance, fear, horror. And enjoyment, of course, is the entrance point to pull-in-inflow, desirable inflow. | ||
Then there’s the communication lockup inside of the bank of “Should I do it or shouldn’t I do it? Or “Should I have it or shouldn’t I have it?” Or “Is that space tenable or isn’t it tenable?” | Well, now-process is to get the individual exteriorized and do this if possible and if not possible to get him exteriorized and do it, well, just do it. And then get him exteriorized and move him in and out of large, heavy, actual masses. Start in with a large rock, here on Earth. Have him go in and out of that rock. Maybe go in and out of it, feeling courageous about it. And go in and out of the rock, you know, “outside the rock and inside the rock,” feeling that he enjoys it. And then have him own the mass of the rock from inside and then own it while he’s outside of it. And, in other words, just get him interiorized and exteriorized and interiorized and exteriorized and interiorized and exteriorized from this mass. And then repeat this on something like the Moon and repeat it on the Sun. Sooner or later, of course, repeat it on Earth, have him be in Earth and outside of Earth and so forth. And if he begins to boil-off, why, we will do something there in terms of havingness, we’ve-just can assume that we have upset his havingness balance. And so we remedy his havingness with more mock-up and we will probably get a second avalanche and this is the way we’re going to boost him out. | ||
You find this person is about to rent a new apartment, [sigh] See, is it tenable? Can he occupy that space? No, he knows he can’t, because he gets kicked out of all the spaces he occupies, but he’s got to occupy some place-he can’t sit on the street. Of course, the apartment isn’t very good. | Now, you can do Change of Space Processing, you can do anything you want to with a preclear after he’s well exteriorized, but let’s remember to exteriorize and interiorize him from lots of mass. | ||
Well, this is handled in a very elementary fashion. You can get a case entrance just boom, just like that, just by finding out what kind of a problem the guy is wrestling around with. And you just-should he do it, shouldn’t he do it? | Let’s also remember to change his emotions while he’s exteriorized, holding one emotion upon the body and feeling several himself, and also have him manufacture the particle called sensation and sexual sensation, other particles. And certainly have him be able to handle the particles of courage and enjoyment. | ||
Now, one chap that certainly all of you know of, not in this Unit, one time I asked him to do something. He’s connected with the HAS, and I asked him to do something. And a long communication lag immediately ensued. It was over the telephone, see. Long-yet it was something rather simple. And he said, “Well, I’ll call you back.” | Take that list you have there, clean up the MEST universe on him. You know “Be at the place where you entered the MEST universe” and “Be here” And back and forth, back and forth, back and forth and back and forth until he’s cleaned up these areas and come up to present time. | ||
“No,” I said, “you’re not going to call me back. You’re going to run, at this moment, Tm certain I want to do it.’” | Male voice: How well exteriorized does be have to be before you can use that? | ||
“Well, I don’t know about that.” | Exteriorized with some certainty. Don’t do it while he’s still in the body; it will practically kill him-that last one. Change of Space while still in the body is dynamite. | ||
“Well, ‘I’m certain I don’t want to do it,’ then.” | And after you have remedied his havingness considerably in terms of this and that, why, let’s have him reject some things. And if possible, start an outflow avalanche on him. Have him reject lots of things and then have him look through matter and at matter. And have him make his own space. | ||
“Okay,” he says. “I’m certain I don’t want to do it. All right. I’ll just hold that concept for a moment.” | You just would go along with the various things we’ve been talking about with this type of processing. | ||
And I said, “Run the concept ‘I’m certain I want to do it.’” | If a case is very resistant, have him waste in brackets, courage; have him waste in brackets, enjoyment. If he’s very, very occluded, have him waste and save and accept and desire and be curious about black machines, in brackets. Give him a lot of Straightwire like you have in 8-C. I gave you a couple of interesting ones here today on “Spaces you’re not trying to close.” “And spaces you’re not trying to open.” | ||
“Okay,” he says. | Confusions are liable to show up where he has confused one kind of MEST with another kind of MEST. He’s liable to have an asteroid confused with Earth. By the way, Earth was, you know, flat for an awfully long time, everybody said so. Well, this applies to an asteroid, it would make a person feel like he wasn’t here. He’d know Earth was round, you see, he’d know Earth was spherical and then somebody would say “Well, this place is flat.” And the only flat pieces of matter he’d know about would be someplace like the asteroid belt. He might get confused and consider that he was on an asteroid, not on Earth, which would be an unreal and lost geographical misposition. | ||
“Now, mock yourself up dead because you did it. Now mock yourself up dead because you didn’t do it.” | I’ve run that out of several preclears, by the way. They think they’re on another planet. They think they are elsewhere merely because they have had it laid in very heavily that Earth is flat. You know, they look down through the crust of Earth and they find nothing but emptiness down there. You know, it can’t be that they’re on Earth, then, can it? Earth is round. | ||
It was a most elementary thing. It was something like calling somebody up and cancelling something. It just stopped him. And all of a sudden pyrotechnics set in. The guy had me mixed up with his own Papa and we had been getting a communication block on everything I had been asking him to do for a long time-although it was rather simple and elementary things, it wasn’t anything unroutine. And we were just getting more and more block, till all of a sudden he was hung up on inaction. He couldn’t even talk about doing something. And it blew on “Certain I don’t want to do it. Certain I want to do it.” | Thetans for ten thousand years have known Earth was round, by the way. | ||
Only I wouldn’t let him tell me then whether he would do it or not. I said to phone me back in about six hours and give me the answer. Well, he phoned me back in six hours to say that his case had blown up, as far as he was concerned. We’d just unlocked the lines this much. | Somebody coming along and trying to tell you as a kid that everybody believed the Earth was flat before Columbus, certainly doesn’t know anything about history. In fact, the person must be a schoolteacher. Fabulous. | ||
Now, what’s the essential difference there between giving somebody orders and a communication lag and a bank lockup? See, these things are all tying together in a bundle of what? Certainty. | The Earth was calculated, I think, with an inaccuracy of l/25th, long before Julius Caesar. And the intelligentsia of Earth had never considered it was flat and Columbus never proved that it was round. Columbus made the most fantastic navigational error, you know. That’s the most fabulous error on record. | ||
Communication lag. How can a guy possibly talk fast if every communication he’s got goes down line, hits shunt 62, goes off into bypass 34 ... Why did it jump off of line 1? It’s because there’s two dynamic impulses directly opposed, each one of them completely certain but both of them together compounding into an entire uncertainty. And that’s a thinking machine. | If the Earth had been the size that Columbus said it was, why, he would have landed in the Indies instead of America. But he had computed the fact that the distance-the width of the Atlantic and Pacific -was two-thirds of the width of the Atlantic. That’s quite an error when you get down to thinking about it. It’s a big factor there! And he never did prove it; it was proved by Magellan. But it wasn’t proved by Magellan at all. Prince Henry the Navigator and the rest of the boys, they were going down past the Equator and so forth out of Portugal, had never calculated otherwise than the Earth was round. That’s why they could navigate. | ||
If you took a dog out here-do you want to drive a dog kind of nuts? Just grab one by the collar sometime and say-well, a dog that’s been trained, particularly-and say, “Run” or “Beat it” or “Go” or “Go fetch it” and keep holding him by the collar. Nyyaaooww. He’ll go into apathy. You’re going across his training impulses and you’re locking his bank up. And you can lock it up just tighter than-though it’s nailed down to go to the bottom of the sea, like Beebe’s bathysphere. That dog will come out of it after a while, but he’ll be in kind of dopey condition. | People were quite customarily shooting the Sun and so forth for centuries and centuries and centuries before Magellan did a circumnavigation. What Magellan proved was that somebody could sail around the world, not that the world was round. | ||
Now, another thing you can do to an individual is run him off into a psychotic pattern by forcing him to reach for something and then inhibiting any reaching and then insisting that he reach and then keep him from reaching. You see that again as a communication setup? Well, that one is the batty one because it turns on the emotion that is insanity itself. It’s frenzy. | But this other funny one has drifted along with a lot of balderdash and nonsense, straight down the groove and has oddly enough been wildly supported by the Church. It has been the Church that’s believed this. Well, the Church “believed this,” what the hell do you mean? They didn’t “believe this,” they weren’t that stupid. They must have wanted willfully to mix somebody’s geography. About the only thing you could do to really confuse a thetan was-he thinks he’s on one place and then you get him pinned down very nicely and then you sell him a big sales talk on the fact that the place he’s on has a different geometric shape, it’s flat! The thetan says, “My God! I must be on the asteroid belt! Well, this is all very silly. I thought I was here and I am there, but then there must be here. Oh, dear, where am I?” And that’s really the effect it produces upon your preclear when you run into this. | ||
Well, you better take a look at your auditing and find out if you’re trying to make a preclear more certain or if you’re playing a mouth organ. Well, now the one thing that keeps an individual from being certain, of course, is fear, which is why I gave you a lot of talk about courage. And every once in a while a preclear will say to you, “Well, I don’t know whether I’m actually putting it out there or not. I think I am drinking the bank dry. I think I just must be taking the energy out of one part of the bank and putting it over into another part of the bank. I’m just sure I must be doing that.” | If you have a preclear that looks down through the crust of Earth and finds nothingness-you know a few feet down and then nothingness-he thinks he’s probably on the asteroid belt. There’s an excellent way to run this, is you take Earth, you have him mock-up Earth or get an idea of a sphere of Earth. If he’s a black case, he can get a sphere, you know, he can get a black sphere and so forth. You have him get a sphere and make it into a flat thing, get a sphere and turn it into something flat and a sphere into something flat and a sphere into something flat and a sphere into something flat and a sphere into something flat. And after a while, this weird one shows up, all of a sudden, why, there’s a sort of a spong ping and the asteroid belt is in one place and Earth is here. He’s got the two things crossed. | ||
Well, let’s just jump that objection before it ever occurs. You get a preclear that isn’t three feet back of his head easily, let’s recognize he must be drifting on down toward the finishing end of the MEST universe cycle-of-action. | There must have been quite an operation going on there and it might be part of the between-lives operation. I never inquired very deeply into it. | ||
There goes a door, [bang] I told you a door was going. | By the way, just a side comment on the between-lives period and so on. You know, everybody in the between-lives area is awfully nice to a thetan, you know that. They don’t get rough with them. They are a little bit condemning, “Well, you failed again” and so forth, but sort of on the basis of “We forgive you. And for your own good, you’d better forget.” And everybody is very nice to him and they turn on his knowingness for a moment and turn it off again just to show him they can. | ||
Now, he’s drifting on down toward the MEST universe cycle-of-action with a banged door and the MEST universe cycle-of-action has this particularity: Create-Survive-Destroy. And at create, the peculiarity is-at create, things are well spaced and three-dimensional. In the center bracket they’re only mediumly dimensional and the space is pretty crushed up. And at the end of the cycle-of-action they are nonexistent, but just before they’re nonexistent, they’re / | -dimensional. In other words, the finishing end of the cycle is flat, no space and so forth. | But he quite routinely leaves that area thinking “what nice people everybody is.” Now, somebody who is getting bunches of purple lights showing up and so forth is probably looking at the Gates of Mars. And you do Change of Space between here or an operating room and the Gates of Mars-Change of Space, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth-these purple lights will blow. | |
All right. This preclear’s worry is then represented by this curve. The individual can’t be three feet back of his head and his occlusion is bad, so he must be somewhere on the late end of this cycle-of-action. He must be somewhere over there between survive and destroy. See, he’s not dead, so he can’t be all the way down to destroyed. And he’s afraid he won’t survive, so he’s past survival, so he must be somewhere between survive and destroy. Right? | Purple lights. The thetan always has a little amount of mass, he’s always packing around some mass. It is visible in ultraviolet light, that’s why the Gates of Mars are the Gates of Mars. | ||
You ask him real quick and he’s either getting no mock-ups or the mock-ups he’s getting are two-dimensional. And either one of those manifestations puts the individual past survive, en route to destroyed, and that’s where he is on that cycle-of-action. | There’s a lot of mechanics involved in this that we don’t have to worry about. There’s a terrific amount of technology involved in how you get an individual to report to a between-lives area to get reindoctrinated and to accept your assignment of the body and to know where the bodies are and to get proper assignments out and everything. They are having an awfully interesting time of it. No doubt about that. We don’t have to worry about that. At no time has it ever really come up and smacked us in auditing. We got Change of Space Processing that remedies it. And so do a lot of other things. So, any questions? | ||
Well now, of course this individual is going to say to you, "Well, I don’t know, but I think I’m probably draining it all out of my bank. Actually, I’m not creating new energy, I’m just taking it out of one part of the bank and putting it in the other part of the bank.” | Female voice: I have a young man, preclear, at home, who has nearly all the time, that purple. | ||
Why does he know this so well? He knows it, because he knows better than he knows anything else, that he can’t create. | Yeah. That’s the Gates of Mars-he’s stuck. Oh, such significances blow out in any type of this processing. You remedy somebody’s havingness and more darn ridges and ideas and gimmicks and significances and facsimiles and implants start blowing out. Only reason he holds in an implant is he doesn’t have enough energy, he thinks. | ||
Well, I could sit here and give you a very, very long list of processes which you would run on create or creativeness, but the foremost of them and the most effective of them would, of course, be to waste creation in brackets. | |||
You would be amazed at the difference of working concepts in brackets, or pluses and minuses in brackets, and wasting in brackets. Wasting goes straight into havingness, you see. And wasting in brackets, then saving in brackets-and normally, when I say "wasting,” I also mean saving in brackets-accepting in brackets, desiring in brackets and being curious about. You could put another one in there: enforcing things on people in brackets. | |||
Now, you’d be surprised at how much more workable it is to waste than to run these things otherwise. It’s very workable. There are many other processes and this process is not an unlimited process. But you certainly better pitch in with such a case and immediately realize this individual must be late on that curve of action. | |||
So what are we going to do with him? He’s obviously not going to be certain that he’s creating any of the mock-ups because he isn’t certain he’s creating the energy. The energy must be coming from someplace else. You find a person who’s gone into mysticism thinks the energy quite often is being granted him by Vishnu or Kreda or a shredded wheat biscuit. | |||
Now, our problem with this case, then, is to get him into the field of creation. Well, if we just wasted creativeness in brackets, round and round and round and round for a while, you know, several times around, and just wasting, without adding the rest of it particularly, this first time-only we’ll have to finish it up later. And then were to run courage around in brackets (wasting courage around in brackets, you know), then wasting creativeness and wasting courage, and then wasting enjoyment and then finish up by wasting a bracket and saving a bracket and so forth of creativeness and courage and so forth. And we’d get him out of this sup er certainty that he can’t create, it’s the easiest way to get him out of it. | |||
I said you could handle it plus and minus and get him off the line, but if we waste it, we’re also processing havingness. He obviously can’t have creativeness and he will find exactly why he can’t have creativeness that will satisfy him. And he will upset the devil out of those communication blocks he has, the second you ask him to waste creativeness. | |||
You find out that he was so hammered and pounded on the subject of sex, for instance, that he couldn’t possibly, really, with any aplomb at all, ever have anything to do with sex. He’s been so pounded around about eating that he knows he has to eat to have energy. All sorts of things will turn up like this. | |||
And maybe if he was in an artistic line or something on that order, people pounded him around about creating until he’s just groggy. He’s finally succumbed. | |||
Engineers quite commonly have bought conservation of energy to such a degree they realize there’s nothing in the universe that can be created. You know, it’s all got to have been done before. The motto of engineering is “It’s all been done before. It’s all been done before.” | |||
You can tell somebody who’s in bad shape, just instantly. You know what kind of a condition the guy is in, who says to you, “Well, they did that a long time ago” and so on. You’ve just given him an idea and he says, “Well, we did that a long time ago. You know, it’s been done before. It’s been done before.” The rest of the statement is “because there isn’t anything original in the entire universe.” | |||
This is quite remarkable. That’s a sweeping statement if I ever heard one and yet it’s made by the most conservative fellows, so they evidently don’t think of it as a sweeping statement. That’s a real wild one. Nothing original in the whole universe? You mean, it never got created? Oh boy. | |||
Well, now how do we move in on such a process on such a case? Well, let’s waste creativeness, of course. Let’s just waste the early-not because it has any other significance, that we want to waste the early end of the cycle, because he can’t have an early end of the cycle; in other words, he can’t start. | |||
The individual who can’t arrive, by the way, can simply get arrivals better by wasting arrivals. I mean, we can change his bank around just by wasting arrivals, wasting stops, wasting death, wasting destruction. | |||
Let’s say an individual is fixedly, compulsively on the early end of the track and he can’t do anything else. It’s a sort of a manic. He’s got to create, got to create, got to create, got to create and can’t have anything that’s been created. Well, boy, that’s another kind of an activity. The guy has been stuck on the early end of the track, similar to somebody that’s stuck at the age of three on the time track, see? And here’s this proposition. Well, you’d better waste some death on him and then he can run a full curve. | |||
You could understand by that, that the ability to run a full, complete, smooth curve is one of your goals in processing somebody. Get him to a point of where he can run a full curve. But that’s been said too many times. Create and Destroy Assessment and Create and Destroy Processing, very early material and so on. It should be obvious to you that you’re trying to get an individual that can start and stop and change. | |||
Now, you can waste any of those things and you’ve got something about this. | |||
Now, I gave you Courage Processing, not to get more air in my lungs, because there’s more air about ten thousand feet up than there is here, not in terms of density but expansiveness. And I didn’t give it to you for you to forget about particularly, because the fellow who is stuck, is stuck in a flinch of one kind or another. Remember, I told you those three categories of flinches? All right. If he’s stuck in a flinch someplace, then he’s of course scared of something. | |||
Well, a stuck-flinch is really scared. Now what do you expect this fellow to do? Now, you just sail in on him and you run some process like-well, I just said something about-well, a black case, you put shells over their heads and so forth. Yeah, that’ll fix up a lot of black cases. But if he isn’t certain he’s putting a shell around his head, the process won’t work. If he isn’t certain it’s there, it won’t work. | |||
Mock-up Processing, pounded and hammered long enough, maybe would get a guy up the line. Actually, pounded and hammered long enough, it does get a guy up the line, just non sequitur processing such as in Self Analysis, just because he keeps adding particles and adding particles and adding particles. And after a while he gets the idea, “You know, I couldn’t be getting this much energy from the bank, I must be putting some there myself.” You know, big thought. | |||
Sooner or later it will hit that one, will hit other computations. Furthermore, you’re making space for him all the time. Furthermore, you’re giving him mass. And there’s all kinds of things occurring with that process, but that’s a long, arduous process. And boy, the guy who isn’t certain of those first few mock-ups he’s putting out is going to be on that process a loooong time. And you don’t want to be on a process a long time. You don’t want to be on a case a long time. | |||
So let’s just short-circuit the whole thing and let’s just sail into the case and something he can be certain of. | |||
So we say, “Well, all right. Put black shells around your head.” | |||
And the guy says, “Well, yeah.” | |||
“Put another one around and look through the first one at the second one.” | |||
And, “Okay. Uh, all right.” | |||
“Now put a third one out there and look through the second one to the third one.” | |||
And the guy says, “Okay.” | |||
Just because you’re telling him is no reason he’s doing it. You say, “Well, did you put a black shell around your head?” which would be a routine auditing question after he said, “Yes.” | |||
“Did you put a black shell? Are you sure it’s there?” | |||
Fellow says, “Oh no. I’m never sure it’s there. I’m never sure of anything. How should I be sure of anything?” Something on this order. | |||
Well, you’d just better back off of that process right then-not an hour from then. The process won’t work if he’s not certain about any of it, because you’re obviously hitting a plugged communication line. The line must be plugged. It’s bypassing, so he’s got uncertainty of some sort or another. You must be running down a whole chain of “maybes.” Must be just going right straight through this chain. So how do you handle it? You get another process. | |||
Now, there’s one last-ditch process that I gave you all here one day. When a fellow just starts to get uncertain, uncertain, you just can’t get him certain of anything, get the most certainty he can get on the First Dynamic, the Second Dynamic, the Third Dynamic, the Fourth Dynamic, the Fifth Dynamic, the Sixth Dynamic, the Seventh Dynamic and Eighth Dynamic-the most certain datum he can get-and you’ll unbalance the bank. You’ll unbalance his communication system. And all the time you’re validating certainty, so it’s a good process. You’re giving life to certainty. | |||
Well, in the “net aggregate,” to coin a cliche-I always wondered what that was. The engineers have aggregate they make concretes out of, but they don’t carry them in nets. It’s a very puzzling thing, [laughter] I thought of it for many years. I’ve had the datum parked over there at the side and someday I’ll solve it. And I don’t suppose it has anything to do about the fact that I had to go to class but didn’t want to go to class and that’s why all the engineering I had is hung up on a “maybe.” But anyway, I... [laughter] | |||
When we get a preclear who is working well or working badly, he will work better on those things and in those areas of which he’s most certain. And certainty, when it’s validated in processing, is a continual, expansive thing. It’s expansion, when started. It begins to get more certainty. You could say that certainty breeds more certainty and uncertainty breeds more uncertainty. | |||
